http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3640507 LONDON -- The NBA is laying off 9 percent of its work force over worries about the U.S. economy, commissioner David Stern said. "We made a decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly, so we began a belt-tightening that will result in a work-force reduction of about 9 percent domestically," Stern said Sunday, speaking before an NBA preseason game at London's O2 arena. This translates into about 80 jobs, he later told Reuters. "There is a season-ticket renewal rate decline, and new sales are also being hit," he said. "My guess is when [the regular season] kicks off, we will be down modestly in season ticket sales."
Maybe the players should take some pay cut too, so the tickets won't be so expensive, so the average joe can actually afford it.
that's ridiculous. of all the millions and millions being floated around in the NBA and they can't keep 80 people who probably don't make nearly as much.
that's ridiculous. of all the millions and millions being floated around in the NBA and they can't keep 80 people who probably don't make nearly as much. seems like the economy is the easy scapegoat nowadays.
80 guys wouldn't make a dent in their budget. Even if they were all making $70k, that's only $5.6 mil. It doesn't even add up to the Mid-level Exception. They could raise that much money in a new sponsorship.
Thats a pretty significant cut 9%. Always thought sports were not affected by recessions, the economy must really suck.
when do companies usually start laying off people? right before the holiday season? i sure hope no one at my job gets laid off. that would suck.
JF works for the Houston Rockets and Clutch City Sports & Entertainment. the NBA made cuts to their corporate staff. but the Bobcats on the other hand...
