while i don't think this is poland all over again...how would you feel in georgia's position? you send your troops to iraq and stand up against russia desperately pleading to be in nato. your people are willing to die for the US in iraq...and when they get attacked you barely get some phrases of sympathy and support?

and yeah it is interesting both what russia does next in uzbekistan. and similarly this certainly does this embolden china in its eventual showdown with taiwan.

obviously saakashvili miscalculated. but georgians aren't crazy for wondering where the hell US support is. and the US isn't exactly in a position to go all out for georgia.

max obviously you know i agree. however i do think there's something to be said for at the very least talking tough. i don't want to make georgia poland...but i do think this is a striking moment in history. russia went after an ally and we didn't do anything. this sends a strong signal to china as well.

I saw the interview earlier on CNN and thought the guy was kind of a nut case, "The Georgian people will fight until the last drop of blood!".
It was also hilarious when CNN was trying make a big deal about some Russian troops moving around:

"Our reporters are with a convoy of Russian troops driving on the the highway about to attack the Georgian capital. This convoy possible include 1 Main Battle Tank!"

Seriously if they where going to attack the Capital of a nation don't you think they would send more then just 1 tank?

The only way the US could threaten Russian into withdrawing is if they gain the other NATO nations pleading their armies to support Georgia.
I seriously doubt the other European countries would send their troops against Russia when they wouldn't even send them to Iraq.

They reason they refused to send troops had nothing to do with being afraid of the opposition. The Russian invasion of Georgia is much more like the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. That seemed to draw out a few European countries to send their armies.

i'm not even arguing against that. i'm arguing that our forces are stretched thin if we thought this was worth some greater action. that we've limited our own abilities to respond.

Iraq's invasion of Kuwait by a volatile dictator running a nation with its economy in shambles. While Russia is still legitimate democratic government, although you could question the level of freedom in the country.

Kuwait is a oil rich nation and during that time was increasing its production of oil to stop Iraq from raising the price of oil world wide. While Georgia is really nothing more then a buffer to slow down Russia's ambitions in that region.

Right now only the US and a few former Soviet Union nations are making any kind of demand for punishment for Russia's aggression. While the European powerhouses are simply standing by calling for a truce in the conflict. This tells me that they are hesitant to show any sort of aggression against Russia, which further questions their willingness to actually go to war if such time will ever arise.
