E3 was a bit of a let down in regards to the conferences and a couple of other things IMO, but as I was checking out some of the games I missed over the weekend, I noticed there were a lot of good games on display at E3. I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to get everyone's opinion on what game was the best at E3. For simplicity's sake, I tried to limit the poll options to games releasing in 2008...or at least I think all of these games are scheduled for an 2008 release. Of course, I couldn't get all of them, and for those of you that only came away impressed by Resident Evil 5 or something like that, feel free to vote Other (although please post what game you liked). Here some videos for the 9 games that I picked to be in the poll (tried to get a lot of gameplay or developer walkthroughs):

Definitely a game I will have to buy yet have no interest in that type of game normally. You know a game is exciting when it crosses those kind of boundaries.

Personally, I don't get the big thing about LBP

I'll probably wait and see just what kind of things the community will be able to come up with before making the investment

    ditto.

I checked out some of the videos and it just seems like the hype has gotten out of control.

The only thing that really excites me out of that list is SF4.

Any game that can make a sales presentation entertaining deserves all the hype it gets:
    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=36416"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=36416" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object>

Although to be honest, I never really thought LBP got that much hype. But then again, I love it, so it is easy to misjudge that. It does get a lot of praise from E3 attendees. In fact...I just realized I made a similar thread last year (somehow thought I was being original with this thread), and I had LBP there too. Poll results seem to be gone (?), but I probably shouldn't have put the same game in the running two years in a row.

I am a little surprised that so many people come away impressed by the game considering how complicated it is. The main points for the game involve cooperative play, the creating of levels (or Sackboys and Sackgirls), and then the whole sharing experience. Not exactly things you can demonstrate in a 3-4 minute video, or even 15-20 minute gameplay sessions. I love any game that attempts to let the community "make" the game so to speak, so I was just about sold after reading the description for the game over a year ago...but I'm guessing I'm in the minority there.

Ironically, SF4 is probably the thing I care the least about, although I knew I had to put it in or else I'd have to face the wrath of tinman. :)

that's cause you hate the fact that Street Fighter Franchise has survived so long and that its a true game of skill, people play for the competition and don't care about games that are just super long cinemas.

A game that originated in the ARCADE, not the PLAYSTATION.

its not turned based, its SKILL based.

A game that transformed the CONTROLLERS and # of BUTTONS ... FOREVER!

with all this said.. I voted for Gears of War 2 cause the console version of SF4 didn't show up.

Gears has good grafix blah blah, but the multiplayer, human shield, and chainsaw stuff is different from anything out there.

Not really, I'm just not a big fan of fighting games. Although despite my earlier comments, SF4 looks like it is turning out better than I expected (was a little worried originally).

And I guess that is the last time I use the rating system at Gametrailers to pick a video. :(

I blame it on the death of the arcades with the rise of the internet. you didn't experience the fun of the arcades and competition of street fighter.

its different from games today cause its deeper and more complex in terms of gameplay. you weren't into it cause you don't play multiplayer games. street fighter was just one on one. your skill vs the opponents.

there's no other dude on your team to bail your out. you can't camp all day. its fast and furious. that's why SF endures..plus the SF music is the best in all video games. you recognize that Ryu stage, Guile, Ken.

they have street fighter tournaments, not final fantasy tournaments!

Well, I think they may have had Ehrgeiz tournaments, which is almost like a FF tournament:

Chalk up another one who doesn't share the excitement.

I wasn't blown away by any of the games they've shown, considering all the ones I'm currently looking forward to I've known about already and most have seen videos of. It was a pretty boring E3.

The art direction in SF4 looks like crap IMO. It's neither realism or cartoon, but rather a horrible blend of both. Not to mention all these new characters scream generic.

I've seen the arcade scene, though admittedly I was a few years younger than the frequent visitors there back then. It was definitely a great atmosphere to be a gamer in though.

What games are you looking forward to?

I thought the conferences were boring, but E3 overall was pretty good IMO. At least as good as recent E3s, although I guess that may not be saying much.

For some reason, I was thinking PoP was a 2009 game. Probably should have put that on the list instead of Dead Space or something...although I guess I wouldn't be surprised to see a small delay to 2009.

Speaking of Ubisoft...what ever happened to Splinter Cell Conviction? I know it has been delayed a lot, but IIRC, they were wanting to put it out in Q1 of 2009. Figured it would have been at E3 if that was the case...although maybe I missed it.

Agreed. This is what turned me off from the game initially, although it looked better once I saw some gameplay.

The new characters at least make sense. Street Fighter 3's characters were dumb and made no sense. they had a freaking robot dude... still better than Tekken.

the gameplay and graphics look good though.

PoP, Star Ocean 4, FF13, Alpha Protocol...pretty much it. I'm sure I'll buy more games but I'm not keeping tabs on anything else.

They didn't show any gameplay of Alpha Protocol, did they? All I saw was an interview at GT, but I could have missed something. I like the idea, although I would have hoped we would have seen gameplay by now if they want to release in February 2009. Of course, I'm not very familiar with Obsidian's way of promoting their games (or Sega's way of promoting Obsidian's games), so maybe this is somewhat common.

So pretty much the only games that really excite you are 2009 games (except maybe PoP)? Sort of wish I had that problem. :(
