My wife and I just picked up our first foster kid. She's a beautiful nine month old girl, named Whisper. We had to take classes over several month to become certified as foster parents. And we have been visiting with Whisper over the last couple of weeks to ease the transition. She's a happy little kid, who's smart, big for her age, and already walking. Needless to say, we're thrilled.

Better hurry and change that name before she gets too used to it.
Seriously congrats though.

Congrats! It takes a big heart to be a foster parent. You and Mrs. Gifford are good people.

That's nice. Rich, old douchebags in my city are keeping a couple from making their house into a foster home because they're afraid their property values will plummet. It's big news up here.

Congratulations!!!! That must be such an exciting time for you guys.
I met up with a friend last night who is adopting a 15 year-old girl. Her and her husband are barely 30. That just seems so scary to me...but I respect them for it.

Nothing at all.
She'd even have a leg up on the competition if she ever wanted to become a stripper.

My wife and I took in her youngest brother for his last year of highschool when we were about 26. Some things were hard, but it wasn't too bad. They can feed themselves, wipe themselves, bring you beer, etc.
EDIT: Whisper's a good name.

How do foster parents cope with taking care of a child, basically falling in love with them, only to see them adopted away or go back to the original parents. That must be very hard.

I think that is very hard. I don't know how we'll cope with that situation, if it ever happens. In this case, there's a better than average chance that we will be able to adopt her. For couples that are foster parent for a long time with multiple kids coming through their home, I guess the knowledge that they are able to help so many kids, helps them deal with the feeling of loss when kids leave.

Congrats on the addition to your family!
I am sure it will be a very fulfilling experience. Kids are great.
Even though it's hard to think that she may someday be taken back by her biological family don't let that keep you from loving her completely.
Make every day the best as you can with your foster daughter for as long as you can.
Good luck!
