Reasonable money and a typical low-key, but likely a very smart sign by the dreaded Spurs. A player I think could have helped the Rockets. The uncertain Landry salary figure basically prevents the Rockets from doing anything about it.

    Spurs sign Mason

I think this assures Barry leaves--Mason takes his combo guard role. Hou or Phx probably is where BB goes.

Mason is OK, but I'd rather have Barry for an LLE (1.9 mil) than Mason at 3.7 mil a year. Hopefully last year was more of a fluke good year for him and he struggles in Pop's system.

Seems like whenever I saw Mason play last year, he was either terrible or very good. Mason's gonna need more consistency to stay on Pop's good side because he doesn't tolerate yoyos very well.

I like Roger Mason Jr.; scrappy player who worked hard to get where he is, he sort of reminds me of a larger Chucky Atkins. Not a whole lot of PG skills, but a real gunner from outside; I figured the Wizards would try a bit harder to keep him. Ernie Grunfeld has definitely proven to be pretty damn good in Free Agency lately, so I doubt this is going to come back and hurt them too badly.

Assuming this means Brent Barry is joining the Rockets, it's interesting to see how the FA philosophies of San Antonio and Houston have changed over the past few years; In 2005, the Rockets had the Dinosaurs, and needed to inject youth; the Spurs needed veterans that could "fit" into the system and provide stability behind TP and Ginobili; now the Rockets need to find veteran fits to provide stability and playoff experience, while the Spurs seemingly will need an overhaul of their role players by 2010.

A backup PG was a priority for the Spurs. Behind Parker they have Jacque Vaughn who peaked as a backup player several years ago and a late first round draft pick rookie in George Hill.

Roger Mason Jr. is a marginal NBA talent. I don't see him make a huge difference for the Spurs.

Most Spurs fans seem to be b****ing that they spent most of the MLE on him.

this is an interesting sign for them because they typically like guys who can play the 2 & 3. (bowen, finley, barry, udoka, s.jackson, d.anderson, etc...)

mason is primarily a 2 and is too small for the 3.

so i would guess that manu will start next year and mason will eat up the rest of the minutes at the 2.
