I am a die-hard hockey fan and was so psyched to see Mario back on the ice last night! The man is amazing and seeing him & Jagr back together is tryuly a blessing.
My hockey allegiance has switched from the Penguins to the Columbus Blue Jackets since Mario left and since the Jackets arrived in Columbus, but I must say seeing Mario play again reminded me of why I fell for the sport in the 1st place.
What a thrill to see one of the NHL best make another comeback!

Unofficial CC.NET Survey - Do you watch the NHL on TV (not only playoffs but also regular season)?

YES (1) - I am assuming 4chuckie watches regularly

NO (1)

I want an NHL franchise in Houston just for the prestige of having one. I don't think I would become a fan. I say that because we have the Aeros - successful in the IHL - and I don't keep up with them. I couldn't name one player on the team. I can't name one player on the Dallas Stars and their home games are on FSSW.

Sorry 4chuckie for going off topic. I saw the highlights on SportsCenter. His first game back was more successful than Jordan's. Remember # 45 vs. the Pacers on NBC Now only if he can be as successful as Mike in the postseason.

I actually switched from ESPN to ESPN2 to watch the gallery Bowl.

I didn't care so much that Mario returned to the ice. He doesn't play for a team I root for, so it doesn't affect me so much. (By the same token, I didn't care when Jordan returned to the NBA).

I am a fan of the Stars, and I enjoy watching hockey. It never would've occurred to me to watch, though, had the Stars not come to North Texas. So, I haven't been a fan all that long (I started watching during the '94 playoffs, but didn't really get hooked until I moved back to D/FW in 1997).

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

Smokey just my $.02 but I always do watch the NHL, since the local Fox affiliate carries about 70/82 and I have season tickets as well. I just love the sport.

Matter of fact hockey has totally replaced the NBA and to an extent even the NFL for me. Too many pampered babies in the NBA and NFL and even though the hockey players are well paid, they seem more down to earth and approachable.

I am just totally tired of all the attitudes and players self promoting themselves rather than helping the team.

But yeah you were correct I do watch the NHL regularly!

I was just about to bring up #66's return. Even though I'm a huge Hockey fan (I'm Canadian, eh) and have loved the sport for as long as I can remember, I rarely ever bring it up here because I figure the majority of the posters wouldn't really care, considering south Texas isn't exactly regarded as a hockey hotbed.

However, the return of a living legend in any game should be of at least somewhat of an interest of any sport fan. Though I've always loved his game, I've never especially liked Mario's attitude and lack of committment to the game. Yet, you cannot ignore nor dispute the achievements he has tallied. Not only did he return to the ice only weeks after suffering from radiation on his back treatment during the '94/'95 (I think) season, but he came back and dominated the entire league by winning the scoring title. Hell, how many athletes have been diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkins disease), yet come back to the ice within months right back where they left off? That's why they call him the Magnificent One. It was great to see the big guy have an awesome first game back, and I hope he shows the hockey world the old magic he has so masterfully shown us in the past.

No, I personally don't think a Gretzky return would be nearly as successful as a Mario comeback. In fact, there probably isn't anyone in the league - and very few in sports - who can leave their game for almost 4 years, announce a comeback and take over the game just where they left off just a month later.

Lemieux was only 31 when he retired, and he didn't retire because his skills were eroding. He left because he was losing the passion he had for the game and didn't like where the sport was headed, as well as the fact that his battered body needed a break. There was little doubt whether the big guy would be back, just a question of when. And while Gretzky excelled on his supreme intelligence and sheer passion for the game combined with some skill, Mario is undoubtedly the most physically gifted and talented player in the game's history. Maybe not the greatest, but definately the most skilled. In his prime, the guy didn't even need to practice.

Wayne meanwhile, was smaller and endowed with less physical skill. Also, keep in mind The Great One was 38 when he retired, and is just short of his 40th birthday, so a return is unlikely. Wayne wouldn't even consider coming back now after playing for 20 years in the NHL, and if he did, he could not be as successful as Lemieux is right now. Mario is only 35 and played for just 12-13 seasons, and still has a lot of game left. It should be exciting to watch how his season folds.
