The other day, a friend of mine told me about a detox diet called the Master Cleanse. From what he explained to me, in a nutshell, for 10 days, you drink nothing but a lemonade-type drink made of organic oranges, organic lemons, maple syrup, water, and cayenne pepper. This mixture is supposed to (1) clean your body of all these nasty toxins from eating unhealthy and unprocessed foods, (2) help you lose weight, and (3) give you more energy and make your body healthier.

He said it was pretty torturous for the first few days... but after the 5th day or after, said it gave him lots of raw energy... like a kid again. He also said after the 10 day diet of drinking the stuff, he roughly lost around 15-20 pounds. I did some additional research on it and many celebrities use this method for weight loss.

This whole idea is intriguing to me. One, because I want to shed a few pounds and two, I feel like I eat and drink a lot of unhealthy junk and want to help clean my body a little. So, I want to get some feedback from people who have tried it before and their thoughts on it.

Made it 3 days and couldn't handle it any longer. Have coworkers who swear by it and go for 10 days twice a year. You really need to do your homework to do it correctly.

    And the lemonade is terrible

    Beyonce did it.

I know coworkers who tried it, but none of them lasted and caved. Some just quit, and some 'tweaked' it and added an eating schedule...which nulls the diet I think.

Where did the diet originate? I've never heard of it.

I've tried an all liquid diet before. Brutality defined.

This sounds like something completely unhealthy and something that would deprive your body of essential nutrients.

One day I woke up paralyzed from the waist down.
After a visit to the hospital luckily I found I had 'hyperthyroidism' and 'graves disease'. My body was burning too much potassium (which muscles use for fuel). After treatment I could walk fine, and after several years, I am now finally off horrid thyroid drugs that regulated my metabolism.

I would attribute some of my illness to the use of fasting and diets such as the master cleanse ,which I now believe totally mess up your metabolism (the rest I would attribute to genes and heredity).
Starve your body of food, and instinctively (when you start eating again) it will most likely begin to store more fat in preparation of a future famine.

    There is no 'Easy Button'.
When your hungry, eat, but eat smart.
Stay away from fast and processed foods.
Stick to whole foods, instead of products that are loaded with preservatives.
Bottom line, if you want to lose weight, eat healthier and exercise more.

Even after I share my experience, I still have friends totally amazed by the claims of the 'master cleanse' and determined to try it.
If you have decided you must fast, I would suggest a home made vegetable and fruit juice fast, and maybe even include some home made clear vegetable broth soups. Or maybe even just mix in some 'natural foods day' where you only eat fresh fruits and home made salads (with lemon and oil dressings). This will give your body the nutrition it needs, while giving your digestive system a good rest.

Lol, yeah I'm pretty sure I wouldn't last ten days by just drinking spicy lemonade. That would mean ten days without drinking beer either... that's almost impossible right after finals and during the summertime.

Just trying to get testimonials from people who have tried it before just to get some differing opinions.

I had a co-worker who does this twice a year. The thing she was drinking smells really nasty. I can't imagine myself trying to survive on that crap for 10 days. But she is 50 years old and she still has a body of a 20 years old. So I guess it works pretty well. That been said, fasting is pretty good for you if you know the right way to do it. I think there was a study of fasting on mice, and the mice that fast lives 30% longer the one that doesn't.

This is kind of a holistic diet, and as such, you should take what you hear with a grain of salt. Yes, it will help you lose a ton of weight, because it's a liquid diet. It's also enough calories to survive. The cayenne is there to clean out your sinuses. The maple syrup is there for calories/energy, and the lemon is there to clean out the rest of your digestive system.

I would do more research if I were you. I read up on it and tried it twice...and lasted for a day on each and ended up with a drawer full of lemons. You feel absolutely horrible the first day- you aren't eating so your body is ticked at you.

If I were going to do it again, I would start out by eliminating the carbs from my diet for at least a week. That way it's not such a shock to your system to cut out everything at once. Then I would start the actual diet on Friday, so you can lay around weak as heck on the weekend.

Well, that's certainly a good testimony to think twice about trying this diet.

I haven't done this one, and I think 10 days is a little over the top, but I'm a big believer in detox-type fasts. I did the three day Apple-juice fast a year ago, and I felt much better afterward. I think that the basic premise is true. You do have heavy metals build up in your digestive system, and they do hurt. It is wise to rid your body of them somehow.

I know plenty of people who have tried the cleanse. it's popular within the artist communities, struggling actor types and musicians. I have seen people glowing with radiance after a 10 or 20 day cleanse.

I have also seen someone go practically crazy during a 40 day cleanse. after a while, you find that you have all this extra time to spend, since you are not speding that time eating or preparing food. the guy stayed up all night and would show up like he was high on speed or something. he had that same glow and he lost a few pounds.

you also have to be careful when you get beack to your regular diet. you need ween your system back on liquid foods such as soups and smoothies, then start eating softer foods followed by meats , etc...

most people go raw or vegan for a few days after the cleanse is over.

no drugs, tobacco, or alcohol while you are on the cleanse. that kind of negates the whole purpose.

The thing about this type of thing that people fail to realize is as follows. To perhaps make my post more credible, I have a master's degree in nutrition.

If you take the average poster on this bbs, that eats processed crap, pizza, soda's, and sugar on a weekly basis and then immediately jump into this type of "shock" diet it is very unhealthy and taxing on your system and will throw your already screwed up metabolism into a tailspin. Your body will basically go into starvation mode and you'll add major stress and you won't get the benefits. And like one poster said, once you get off the Master Cleanse diet then you'll probably go back to eating the same garbage again and your body will be completely out of whack.

If you are someone who actually understands how the metabolism works and understand that you can control it with a balanced diet, ya know those of us who eat small meals 4-5 times per day with lean protein, veggies, healthy fats and small amounts of complex carbs mixed in. If one of us does thi diet it will not be so taxing on the digestive system and will not cause the metabolism to have a full blown panic attack. We can actually get really good benefits from this type of diet. And doing this type of thing twice per year would be wonderful. I totally agree with that mindset.

For those of you who want to try this, I would suggest going at least 1 month of eating small balanced meals 4-5 times per day, limit complex carbs and cut out all sugar and simple carbs for this month. You should get your metabolism in order this way if only doing this for a month and then I'd recommend doing the master cleanse and then remember, after the cleanse, stay on the balanced diet for a few weeks afterwards for a more gradual change to your metabolism before you go back to the mcdonalds, taco bell, pizza and processed potato chips and powdered donuts from the gas station.

Of course optimally it would be wise to stay on this balanced diet, but I know that is easier said than done. I'm no saint, I do stay on a balanced diet but every 2 weeks I'll have a cheat day. This day for me consists of pizza and oreos w/milk (my weakness).
