China came to the realization that the world was convicting them in the press for the Tibet mess, completely overshadowing any good press coming from their Olympic games. This is the right move from a Chinese PR perspective.

If China wants anybody to remember anything positive from the Olympic games, this is the right decision

Not surprising, they did similar thing for Darfur, North Korea before.

One thing good about dictatorship is that you can do whatever you want even if your own people don't like it. ;)

Whether its a PR move or not its the right move and IMO long overdue. The PRC have little to lose and a lot to gain from having negotiations.

yes. i've been telling some of my friends that, China is still similar to the imperial times. just that it's no longer a single clan ruling, now it's an entire party. "communism" is almost like the state "religion". so in a way, it's still theocracy. of course, it isn't that simple, but just for comparison purpose. btw, it is the best "theocracy" ever existed there. :D

Well, I don't think anything will come out for these negotiations simply because what Dalai wants is much bigger than the chips he has.

announced it would meet with envoys of the Dalai Lama,

    ______________________________________________________

They were talking before. Dalai Lama revealed that in Seattle. They just make it public from the Chinese side in this move.

He had second thoughts about whether the rolleyes were enough to keep the PRC internet cops from busting him for treason, so he had to add the second post.

I know you are joking but I wonder how/why the .gov approves this site through their gateway. They strictly regulate and observe websites AND peer-peer traffic.

You honestly are proud of a "theocracy" government?

This is like the most harmless move China can make to boost its rep.

It's like the US hosting Israeli-Palestinian peace talks...

regardless what the government is, as long as it serves the people. i don't really give a **** about ideology. as long as they take care of me, then i am cool with them.
