i am sure this has been discussed before, so apologies for being 'that poster' but i'm in the process of converting all my videos to mp4 format and have been trying isquint, which takes forever. what programs would mac users out there recommend for fast, high fidelity, and most importantly free mp4 conversion?
Doesn't your Mac have iMovie already...? In what format is your original file? If you just drag the video onto the iTunes window, then in one of the menus --i forgot whichone-- select "convert selection to iPod"... I think... you can convert it directly without an external program. Sometimes you can play other types like MPEGs without converting them.
One thing Handbrake allows you to do is to take an existing (copy protected) DVD and convert it into a format viewable on an iPOD. I do not believe iMovie or iTunes has this capability. Also, the OP may not have a MAC. Handbrake is free open source and works on OS X and Windows.
He said he's using "iSquint." I believe that program is Mac. don't you just hate it when OPs never come back to their threads?
sorry swolly-d, this op had a lunch meeting. yes, i am on a imac, and imovie does not, as mentioned allow me to put my movies on into mp4 format. the vast majority of the files i'm looking to convert are concerts and tv shows in .avi format. i'm giving handbrake a try and will keep you all updated on my project because i am sure you will be on pins and needles praying it goes successfully. while i'm at it, i'm having another mac-related difficulty. it's with my mouse, which is the stock apple mouse that came with my machine. the scroller on the mouse seems unable to scroll straight down. up, left, right scrolling all work fine, and you can hear the 'clicking noise' from the ball when scrolling up, but no functionality or clicking sound when scrolling down. this just started last night and boy is it annoying! i've rebooted my machine twenty times, even tried time machine but no avail. it has to be a physical defect, perhaps dust/debris stuck inside the brain of the mouse. i guess i'm just being a cheap ass for trying to avoid buying a new mouse. was just curious if this had happened to anybody, or if anybody would know the 'proper' way to snap open my mouse and take a good look around to see if i can't handyman it? thanks cf empire!
Occasionally the ball gets into a state where it won't scroll up. I just kind of mess with it until it starts working again. Perhaps a blast of air would help.
shipwreck, I apologize if I sounded like a meanie. Nonetheless, can't you use a Windows PC to convert, then move to your Mac? For that, I recommend Super©. That goes for you too, playlife.
Ha, no worries, you were not being a 'meanie' to be, i suppose my sarcasm gets lost as i don't use your beloved Handbrake seems to be just what the doctor ordered. If only my mouse scroller would work... Nobody familiar with how to safely dissassemble the standard issue mac mouse? I NEED MY SCROLL DOWN!
ipod music transfer is the best I have used. I like it better than videora, it also supports a lot more formats like .flv
That's how I download, getting most of my videos from mininova.org, iso-hunt.com, thebox.bz (almost exclusively british programming). Ripping dvd's you borrow is a personal favorite, if your machine is up to the challenge.
Oh, I know how to use mininova, demonoid, etc. to download movies. I'm just looking for a program that can convert the movies I downloaded to iPod format. I tried Videora but it's not working for me.
yeah I noticed that I posted a link to a white supremacist website(even though I'm not white) just cause it was the first I ever saw and that's why. Hopefully I get it back, haha.
