I'm sure most of you don't know (or care), but Canada had its own Federal Election last night. Live television coverage began at 9:30 p.m EST time last night, and just two hours later, the Liberal Government officially was declared the winner with a majority government. Jean Chrieten was re-elected as our Prime Minister for his third term in office.

In contrast to the U.S Election that began three weeks ago today and is still not fully resolved, Canada and its 5-party system got it right yesterday. Actually, its one of the few things in recent past that Canada's done more efficiently than its southern neighbour.
With all the political threads covering the election over the past few weeks that I didn't get a chance to go through, I'm sure its been discussed here before; but how many of you feel something drastic must be in order to change the current voting procedure in the States? Was this just a freak election because of the dead-heat race between the Republicans and Democrats, that won't happen again? Or is it a serious problem?

This election was different. OUr country was really split and it really was a close vote. The Florida thing is embarassing, but that could happen anywhere.

Did Chrieten win in a landslide ? I'm sure if it was a close vote there may be controversy.

Every US election I remember has crowned the President-elect almost instantly. It's easy to make fun of the US right now, but it's still the greatest country in the world, imho.

As for election changes, I think they should award the presidency to the guy with the most popular votes, but only if he's a democrat.

Actually, if we used a Parliamentary System like Canada, we would know who our Prime Minister is now, too. Dennis Hastert would've won reelection (and Clinton would've been out since 1994).
