I really have not cared much for a Weezer album since Pinkerton. Thanks to the music from SFTBH, the best thing Rivers has put out in years is his solo recordings. Green was a disappointment, Maladroit was only slightly better, and aside from one song, Make Believe was terrible.
But I still get giddy and excited for each new album. Why is this?

Anyway, the new Weezer album will likely be self-titled and red.

And there ARE clips of the song around. Here's one of them from a GT5 commerical; Pat Wilson is actually doing lead vocals.
    <object width="425" height="373"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DOMXkDGuJSI&hl=en&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DOMXkDGuJSI&hl=en&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="373"></embed></object>

And here's yet another song. It's in the background of the movie 21. It's called "Everybody Get Dangerous":
    <object width="425" height="373"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aehkc5IRhfY&hl=en&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aehkc5IRhfY&hl=en&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="373"></embed></object>

Is anyone else excited? Does anyone else expect to be COMPLETELY disappointed when the album comes out? And can anyone else find any sort of preview of music from the album?

Whoo! =w=! At least for another couple of months! I think I'll end by posting my two favorite Weezer songs (in order):
    Rachel Haden on vocals!

    Pinkerton!

Man, if you liked that stuff, put it all in context with Songs from the Black Hole.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_from_the_Black_Hole

It's a few songs from Along combined with the first half of Pinkerton. It would've been amazing, and I'll upload most of it when I am able to access my hard drive again (using a different computer).

I feel just like you. I LOVED Blue and Pinkerton (Blue is literally one of my favorite albums of all time), but was let down by Green and Maladroit.

You know, I think Matt Sharp leaving really had something to do with their last 3 albums not being as good as their first 2. He did all the falsetto-background vocals that gave =w= their signature 'sound' if you will.

I know Rivers and Matt are friends again. I really wish they would bring him back. It's just not the same without him, especially when you see them live.

But I will give these new songs a shot. Nobody dishes out the power-pop like Weezer.

Damn, I need to load up my iPod with some Weezer tonight! =w=

The Rentals are great live. At least I think so. But remember that the reason Matt left is because Rivers wouldn't let him (or anyone else in the band) have any side projects or creative input. Weezer has ALWAYS been the Rivers Cuomo show. He just decided to go for slickly produced pop rather than that garage sound he had before.

And Matt was invited to rejoin Weezer. He seriously considered it. The Rentals were on hiatus, and he and Rivers were friends again. On one hand, I wish he had. It would've been amazing. On the other hand, The Rentals play I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams at live shows. Rachel Haden (who is awesome) is in the band.

I don't get the Maladroit hate. It's my favorite Weezer album.

Loved Blue and Pinkerton. I actually kind of like Green, but it is total pop as opposed to their earlier sound. It's kind of like a mediocre album full of singles. Hated Make Believe and didn't really care for Maladroit, but it wasn't as bad as people say.

Weezer peaked with their first album, which sucks b/c they had so much potential...IMO

I still have hope for the new album, but I don't have high expectations. I hope they surprise me

i loved blue, pink, green. Lots of people thought green was a let down, but I think that record is a gem.

Many bands would kill to write hooks like those found on the green album

Have you guys seen that thing on Youtube where Rivers is writing a song with the help of people on youtube. It's kind of interesting to watch:

First he comes up with the attitude he wants which is fun, poppy, but tough. He also asks for a song title:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thYRy9MBY_c

Then you can follow it from there on his youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/RiversCuomoAlone

Right now, it looks like this is what the song will be like:

Here's the video of the jam he liked.

    Why didn't he do it?

Man, it’s cool to find another old school Weezer fan on the board. I was a HUGE fan back in the day. I was in Mykel and Carli’s (RIP) fan club, I used to get Karl Koch’s newsletter via REGULAR MAIL, and I’ve even exchanged a few emails with Matt Sharp in the early days of AOL. I’ve seen them 6 times, but not since the Green tour. I got to meet them at a fan club after party in Austin on the Pinkerton tour.

I must admit, I haven’t even thought about these guys in a long time. Actually, I thought they had broken up and I even started a thread on it a few years ago. I’ll have to check out their new stuff.

    Some favorite songs:
    Jamie
    My Name is Jonus
Tired of Sex (gotta love the moog)
    Waiting on You
    The Christmas Song

And perhaps my all time favorite

You Gave Your Love to Me Softly

    IF IT'S TOO LOUD

    TURN IT DOWN

I am about to drop my Matt Sharp conspiracy theory. Pinkerton sounded unlike anything Weezer has done (to an extent anyways). It failed at the time. Cuomo was upset. Sharp parted ways. Years later Weezer resurfaces with success. Sharp sues Weezer claiming he wrote pretty much all of Pinkerton.

Wait its not even like a theory anymore. Its obvious. Matt Sharp did indeed write Pinkerton. He is Weezer.

Well... I guess it's time to get to the nitty gritty of it.
During the hiatus between Blue and Pinkerton, Rivers was bed ridden. One of his legs was longer than the other, and he was having some sort of procedure done where they'd break the leg, separate it, and let it heal. Over and over and over. He began writing a concept album during that time called Songs From the Black Hole about teenagers who get blasted into space. Among the songs on SFTBH are...
    • Tired of Sex
    • Getchoo (spelled Gitchoo)
    • No Other One
    • Why Bother?
In other words, this concept album contained the first half of Pinkerton. In addition to these, the Pinkerton b-sides I Just Threw Out the Love of my Dreams and Longtime Sunshine. And the other songs from SFTBH have a lot in common with Pinkerton.

So why was it never released? Rivers gave ROTR as the reason -- Return of the Rentals. Rivers has always had an incredible amount of control over Weezer. He writes all the songs, and you play what he rights. You don't have a side project. You're in Weezer and nothing else. While he's mellowed out since then, he and Sharp had big disagreements on things.
So Matt formed The Rentals. And the sound that Rivers was going for on SFTBH (that moog sound) went with Matt. Rivers was afraid that SFTBH would be seen as copying ROTR. And since several songs had already been released on Pinkerton or as b-sides to singles, he just scrapped the project.

Rivers used this analogy when talking about Pinkerton later. Have you ever been drunk at a bar and told the guy sitting on the stool next to you all your deepest, darkest secrets? Do you know the feeling you have the next day when what happened the night before starts coming back to you? When you realize what you told a total stranger? That's what Pinkerton is like.

I wish I could just think Sharp wrote Pinkerton. It'd be so easy to just say that it's all because Matt Sharp left the band. It'd be easy to just say all would be well with Weezer if Sharp returned.
But that's not reality. Reality is that The Rentals sound absolutely nothing like Pinkerton. Reality is that Rivers never wanted to be a poster child for a new brand of music, the face of a generation. Reality is that he just wanted to be a rock star like his heroes growing up.
That's the hardest thing to come to grips with. Weezer hasn't been the same since Pinkerton because Rivers doesn't want it to be the same. There will never be another Pinkerton until Rivers decides he wa nts to go back to that. And judging by 3 albums released in the Green style (and about to be 4), Rivers LIKES the new sound. It's brought him exactly what he wants -- fame and success.

And Maladroit hate? I don't hate Maladroit. I don't hate Green. I'm just that big a fan of either of 'em. The best Weezer album since Green is The Doubble Donkey Disc by Ozma (or check out ANY of Ozma's albums.

i really like the green album. it's poppy but there's a lot of good hooks. it's nowhere close to the blue album but i like it better than pinkerton actually.

this last album they put out completely blew, but i'll always look forward to a new weezer.

Holy CRAP!!! I seriously got chills down my spine when those distorted guitars came in! Reminds me of the first time I heard Buddy Holly driving home from college. I had to pull over and check my superman skivvies, I was so smitten.

Damn, if that's the way this whole album is going to sound, I can not WAIT until June!

Anywhere we can hear the whole song??

    =w=

    EDIT:

    Here's the whole song.

Ya... The song is very Blue album isn't it. Too polished though. Polished like Green. Everything is polished and crisp these days. Miss the raw albums, Pixies.

I loved it, I like the story behind the song too. The record company had a meeting with Rivers and asked for more commercial songs on the next album (wasn't Beverly Hills a huge hit???). He got mad and wrote this song in response.

    Lyrics:
They say I need some Rogaine to put in my hair
Work it out at the gym to fit my underwear
Oakley makes the shades that transform a tool
You'd hate for the kids to think that you lost your cool

I'mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm finally dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

Everyone likes to dance to a happy song (Hey, hey)
With a catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along (Hey, hey)
Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart
Maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art

I'mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm finally dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

    No I don't care,
    I don't care (x a lot)

I'mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm finally dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think
