[Help] Coaching/Refing Rec Leagues in Houston

Just wondering if you guys knew more about this topic. I want to get involved and coach this summer in the Spring Branch or Post Oak area, basketball or baseball. At this stage of my life, I'd work best with kids aged around 12 years old.

Is it worth it? Is there some pay/stipend involved? What are some good leagues, and who should I contact?

i remember when i was younger i played soccer and basketball in the YMCA leagues and all the coaches were volunteers, the ref's i believe were payed employess however

Coaches at the Y, and I'd imagine just about any other rec league, are volunteers. Refs get paid, 10/hr for the younger groups and as much as 20/hr for the older ones.

It can be a lot of fun...and at least with the Y competitiveness isn't stressed so much as just having fun, so the level of "involvement" by meddling parents isn't as high, which is nice. But if you want to coach baseball, and don't want to coach the Bad News Bears, then the Y probably isn't the best place for you, since most of the really good players compete in the more competitive leagues.

Your pay comes down the road when you find out one of your former players makes the high school or college team. It comes when you see your former players grow up and become good people. It comes when they see you in the supermarket 10-15 years after you coached them and smile at you and say "Hi Coach".

someone told me that refs in those soccer leagues get paid pretty well.

talking about the ones with many hispanic/mexican players. some of them are part of some soccer assoiation, some of them are not.
