A drunken driver from Michigan sped down a highway in the wrong direction for about seven miles before his pickup truck slammed into a minivan carrying a family home after a holiday trip, police said.

A woman and four children in the minivan, including two authorities say were from Michigan, were killed in the crash that scattered toys, stuffed animals and bits of gift wrap along the edge of the road.

Tests showed that the pickup truck's wrong-way driver had a blood-alcohol level of .254 percent, more than three times the legal limit in Ohio of .08, police said.

The Husband and 2 other children in the minivan survived but are in serious condition at the hospital.

The drunk driver also survived and his injuries were the least severe.

How much do you need to drink to get .254? Man I am surprised that guy still remembered where his car was.

FIVE counts of vehicular manslaughter. He will probably be looking at a very long time in jail. The problem with drunk drivers is that they seldom get seriously hurt or killed. The people they hit have a tendency to come out of the accident with the most servere injuries or are killed.

There is NO excuse for this...NONE. The guy is going to go to prison, and he deserves every moment he gets sentenced to.

A man has lost his wife and four of his children in an accident that could and should have been prevented. Two children have lost their mother and four of their siblings. My best wishes to the injured for a complete recovery...but even if their physical wounds heal, these victims will never again be whole.

I hope his night of partying was well worth it.

This guy should be put in the most severe jail around where his ass will be a regular vacation spot for the inmates.

I just looked it up, and the statutory penalty in Ohio depends on several factors. It looks like for five counts, this guy will be incarcerated no less than 10 years.

I also looked up the Texas Penal Code. Unless there are aggravating factors, he'd be charged with five counts of a second degree felony. Punishment to be between 10 and 100 years (between 2 and 20 for each of five counts).

Man I would hate to have shown up on that scene.

    Poor family, RIP.

I really don't know how I would react/feel when showing up on a scene like that. I've shown up on only 1 bad scene involving kids. They were in the bed of a pickup that was rolled over by a drunk driver. They survived though.

I admit, I do on rare occasions drive after a few beers, not drunk but enough to be over the legal limit. And it does affect my driving, the same way talking on the cell phone or getting 3 hours of sleep the previous night affects my driving. And I would get pissed at how annoying drunk driving laws are.

But of course I read stories like this, and see scary drunk drivers on the highways at night... and it reminds me of just how justifiable these laws are.
