2 Aggies charged in armed robbery case
Starting offensive tackle, freshman defensive end suspended until 'cleared of any wrongdoing'
By TERRANCE HARRIS
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
COLLEGE STATION — Starting offensive tackle Yemi Babalola and freshman defensive end Brandon Joiner have been suspended from the Texas A&M football team after both players were arrested Wednesday by College Station police.
Their arrests stem from an alleged burglary at an off-campus apartment last Thursday in victims were held at gunpoint while some small items were stolen, according to police documents. Drugs and other controlled substances were allegedly seized during search warrants executed at both players residences.
According to a College Station police press release, two black men entered Callaway Villas Apartments around 3:45 p.m. last Thursday wearing hooded shirts and sun glasses and at least one had a gun. The police documents indicate one resident was struck upon opening the door, while two were later bound by tape as a third resident escaped out of a window. They then stole items before fleeing on foot, according to the report.
A&M athletic director Bill Byrne and interim head coach Gary Darnell agreed that both players should be suspended until the charges are dropped. Newly hired A&M football coach Mike Sherman is still working as the Texans offensive coordinator and is not yet part of the day-to-day functions of the team.
“When Coach (Gary) Darnell called last night to inform me of the charges, he and I agreed that these young men need to be suspended from the football team,” Byrne said in a released statement Thursday morning. “They will remain suspended until cleared of any wrongdoing.
“From the information that we have at this time, it is obvious this is a very serious situation. The Texas A&M athletics department will cooperate completely with any investigation into this matter to gather all of the facts.”
Babalola, 21, has been charged with two counts of robbery and possession of two ounces of marijuana. Joiner, 18, is being charged with possession of two ounces of marijuana as well as possession of ecstasy and hydrocodone, according to police documents.
Aggravated robbery is a first degree felony and punishment is between 5 and 99 years in prison and a fine up to $1,000.
The loss of a Babalola, a three-year starter on the offensive line, could be a huge blow for the Aggies as they prepare for Dec.29 Alamo Bowl game against Penn State. Joiner, a 6-2, 231 pound true freshman from Killeen, did not play this season.

Not just armed robbery but possession, too. Well done, boys.
Where you at, bigtexx? Got nothing to say when it isn't your hated Longhorns? If this was a UT related arrest, this thread would already be 4 pages long.

Pretty sad story, Yemi went to my high school, he graduated in 04 and I graduated in 03. Hung out with him before through some mutual friends. His family is good people, and he seemed like a good kid but like many also had their hidden traits (drug use). I haven't talked to him in a while but I hope that everything works out for him personally, but from what I'm hearing / reading it doesn't look too good right now.

"A&M athletic director Bill Byrne and interim head coach Gary Darnell agreed that both players should be suspended until the charges are dropped."
Did they come out and say this? If so, I guess they know something we don't. Kind of a weird comment though.

I suggest all good Aggies squeeze their left nut with their right hand in order to share the pain of these young men. Ha ha.
Seriously, though... take 'em to Junction?

I eagerly await bigtexxx and T_J's "fair and balanced" responses. Don't disappoint me, guys. I'd hate to think you were biased or something.

This is very disappointing. If they did it, then they need to be dismissed and their scholarships revoked.

What a couple of dumbasses. Wow. This kind of crap amazes me.
Hello, my name is Yemi, I think I will flush my amazing opportunity of Big 12 Collegiate Athletics and a full ride scholarship down the drain and become a crackhead.

Just like the school should. They have been suspended until further info / charges dropped. If they aren't....they are no doubt former Aggies.

Police are now saying the robbery that Yemi Babalola and Brandon Joiner allegedly committed was part of a drug deal. The victims of the robbery said they were in contact with the robbers prior to the attack, and gave the phone number they used to set the deal up. The police called the number, pretended to be a "basket company", and got Yemi to give up his name and address. Yemi admits to being at the apartment to "maybe get a little weed," but has no clue how two guys ended up bound in duct tape and robbed (cellphone, some keys, and $40 bucks). He simply "ran inside and that was it."

Not looking so great I guess. Just admitting the attempt to buy is a setback.

We'll see if either of these guys ever play a snap for A&M again. At UT, they'd be suspended for a practice and back out there on Tuesday.

Disgusting, but not surprising. Pretty commonplace for the ESU's (enormous state U's) of the world these days. At least Franny and A&M supporters weren't going around claiming that their team was made up of good kids like Mack did. A&M has a ways to go to catch up to the bonghorns level of crime and drug use, but they appear to be following in UThug's footsteps

Do you really think that? Ramonce Taylor was kicked off the team for his issues...and he didn't rob anyone. The players this past summer that were involved in a robbery were booted.
I can understand giving someone a 2nd chance for a alcohol related arrest or for using drugs. No one that was ever allowed to stay on the UT roster ever held up anyone at gun point nor was alleged drug dealers. The A&M kids managed to do both.
