what are the "must have' downloads for my comp, in terms of security and comp performance? I know there was an earlier thread about this same topic, but I cannot find it...lock this if need be

You can't keep that in your PC... you gotta USE IT and LOSE IT. No one likes stale pr0n.

non-work: a torrent downloader while you're at work, remote access to your PC while at work, etc.
    work-related: nothing.

Don't get Norton or some sort of anti-virus and/or firewall. All they do is slow your computer down. Just run a check once a week. If some hacker wants to get into your system, Norton or some other crap like that is not going to stop them.

Also, WindowBlinds is awesome (and if you choose to pay for the full version, that is even more worth it).

its not a good idea not to have real time virus protection, if you wait till its already done its thing its far too late.
