From Blogging pro basketball with Jonathan Feigen
With speculation getting entirely out of hand, Rockets GM Daryl Morey sought to go on the record, say it clearly and put a stop to it.

Morey e-mailed over a statement tonight:

"As a general rule, we don't discuss trade rumors. However, to prevent speculation, I can say we have had no discussions with the Lakers regarding Kobe Bryant. Our only focus regarding the Lakers is preparing for the season opener October 30th."

    There you have it.

Clearly the Rockets are going after Lamar Odom.

Hey, let Morey play the Grinch for awhile. It's gotten old around here.

I have been reminded, however, that people don't want bad news and many considered my answers to Kobe questions to be bad news. The lure of sports is that there is always hope. They don't want some killjoy to take that away.

Besides, in sports, things do change unpredictably. Kobe could come in, smack around Jim Buss and Jerry could order him out of town before sundown. Better keep that Bob Sura contract handy.

The Rockets did the right thing trying to squelch the unwarranted gossip. McGrady has been around too long to get caught up in such things, but let it fester too often and people are human. It has gotten to Shawn Marion to the point he asked to be traded so he won't have to keep hearing that he might be. In general, GMs hate the fantasy rumors because they get blamed for not making deals that were never an option. It's too soon for Morey to have faced that, but it will happen to him.

More than all that, the Rockets might like the subject to be changed back to the season that opens on Tuesday. In addition to the coincidence of their season starting against Kobe and the Lakers, they might have mentioned the opener to remind that they will be playing real games next week and that Kobe plays for another team.

A few weeks ago, all the offseason additions and the way the Rockets have taken to Rick Adelman's style had people talking about the Rockets again, something we wondered about when they flamed out in the first round again last spring. On Thursday, there was a whole lot of Kobe chatter going on.

Mostly, it has been harmless, sometimes funny. But it is probably just as well that he at least change the subject. I know won't miss it, though I imagine I won't have a chance since it will probably start again by Saturday.

As for the deals the Rockets are trying to do, there has been tons of talk about trades to trim the roster. Of course, most of the league is trying to do the same thing so it's always a longshot.

You might have caught a response I gave to a blog question about the Miami Heat deal for Ricky Davis scuttling the chances of a Kirk Snyder trade. The Heat were to some degree interested in Snyder for the role they now have Davis to fill. I don't know how they were going to do it, but probably by using another team the Rockets might have been able deal Snyder without taking back a comparable salary. That fell through late last week because of the probability of the Davis deal.

If the Rockets could have done it, they might have been able to keep Mike Harris. It's hard to blame the Rockets for not keeping Harris under those circumstances. He would have cost in excess of $1.2 million in salary and luxury taxes, and moved them $770,000 further from getting under the tax threshold, potentially costing them much, much more. That's a lot to spend to improve the inactive list.

They would still like to move salary, but at this point if there is a trade, it seems likely to be of one of the guys they would release, anyway. Either way, unless there is a deal, the Rockets are unlikely to make cuts until Monday morning.

Besides the certain moves, to release Sura and John Lucas III, the Rockets will have to make two other cuts, likely from among Justin Reed, Jackie Butler, Steve Novak and Snyder. Reed doesn't seem to fit, especially with Carl Landry looking like a good project at the position. As for Butler or Novak, I don't buy the argument that Butler is insurance if Yao Ming and/or Dikembe Mutombo get hurt. You can find a big guy to fill in. And if you need more than that, Butler's not the solution. Not yet, anyway.

Better to determine which guy can help you more someday. Butler is very big and very young, just 22 years old. Novak has that shooting stroke, which never hurts. It took Boki Nachbar (a very different athlete) until his fifth season to shoot 40 percent, but there are those now arguing that the Rockets should have kept him around and waited. I don't remember anyone saying that three years ago, but it seems worth giving Novak another year.

    No KOBE please!
I agree with blog, you must give Novak another chance but any of those cuts are very difficult so It's very interesting to see how will Morey do it!

Seriously. I was pissed they tossed Nachbar into the David Wesley trade but I'm 100% behind cutting Novak. Nachbar showed promise in all kinds of ways that Novak hasn't. He may have taken 5 seasons to shoot 40% from the field, but Nachbar was shooting 36.5% and 47.6% from 3 by his 2nd and 3rd years with the Rockets. Is it really that hard to do a quick stat check before writing an article? The Chron sucks and its such a waste giving these shoddy reporters access to the Rockets. I wish there was an alternative newspaper so there would actually be some competition and push for quality. Give those media passes to people who actually deserve it.

Novak is not Nachbar. Nachbar showed an improvement in the second year, and Novak is showing no improvement at all this year.

I think this deal could be actually happen.

Tmac + scola + whatever to fill the salary for kobe. Tmac is an all star and scola if given the chance could be as well. but would we give up scola?

i wouldnt...but that is our most intriguing option

This fact has been confirmed time and time again.

    Next week:

Stephen A. Smith: "The Astros look to deal Carlos Beltran for Terrell Owens."

i know this suggestion will lead to incessant flaming, but i don't care.

it's been accurately pointed out time and again what pros/cons each player rumored-to-be-traded brings to the table.

    that being said:
    1) basketball is a business
    2) you don't get something for nothing

i like what Morey's done with the team over the summer, but one must always be looking to improve the team through whatever means necessary. i love tracy as much as the next guy, but tracy has a ceiling, a ceiling which was all-too-apparent during the playoffs, even though he was 'healthy.'

given what other teams are pitching for Kobe, it's clear that LA wants:
    1) star power, to keep people in their seats
    2) to get rid of their garbage player(s)/contract(s) (Like Kwame)
    3) youth
    4) veteran stability to fill in the hole(s) Kobe will create by leaving
    5) security (specifically, they don't want their new players to bolt)

other deals on the table include one straight-up with Chicago, one three-way with Chicago and Phx, and one three-way with Chicago and Sacto. let's just look at the Chicago deal.

    1) Ben Gordon - contract has not been extended, may bolt; NOT a superstar
    2) Tyrus Thomas - def. valuable, but still raw and very young
    3) Joakim Noah - too early to tell, still very raw
    4) Ben Wallace - huge contract
    5) Kirk Hinrich - likely won't be included
    6) Luol Deng - will NOT be included

LA won't do the trade unless Luol is included; Kobe and Chicago won't approve the trade unless Luol is NOT included.

if the trade gets done somehow, the supporting cast will include: Thabo, Nocioni, Duhon, Joe Smith, and Hinrich. in other words, nothing great.

on the other hand, let's say Houston were to get involved.

    1) TMac - yes, he's an injury concern, but has been fine since seeing Dr. Patterson in Waco. has a superstar draw even though he doesn't necessarily play like one anymore. is great for the Rockets system/atmosphere, but will not take us to the championship b/c of his lack of a killer instinct. still has 3 years, so will not be able to bolt if he gets traded.
    2) Mike James - can play 1/2, has veteran presence, decent defense and good offense. can take Kobe's spot in the Laker's line-up, with TMac filling in at the 3. the Rockets will miss his spark off the bench and at the 1/2, but hopefully Bonzi and Kobe will be able to fill those needs.
    3) Luther Head - good, young shooter. is locked up for 2 years. bottom line is that he's young and still improving. one of the best 3pt shooters in the L (average-wise).
    4) Carl Landry - raw, undersized PF. obviously has a way(s) to go, but down-the-line could definitely be a contributor. in this scenario, he'd basically be the token PF in the trade (to take Kwame's spot).

    for

    1) Kobe, and
    2) Kwame - unmotivated crash-and-burn project. LA would love to dump him, and would likely groom Landry to be everything Kwame wasn't.

again, the NBA is a business. there are plenty people in Houston that respect Kobe as a basketball superstar but despise him as a person. there are more people that fear how he'd co-exist with others, including a star like Yao. we've seen Kobe in the All-Star games and in the Olympics. he plays within the system, and plays on BOTH ends of the court. he's had to take all the shots in LA b/c of his supporting cast (which is kinda his fault to begin with).
you don't get something for nothing, and you have to give up something good to get something good in return. in this case, it's a matter of giving our best talent, a veteran, and some of our youth for the Best player in the NBA and a burn-out/garbage player.

if we did this trade, here's how the teams would pan out:

    LA
    1) Fisher/Farmar/Mike James/Head/Crittenton
    2) Mike James/Head/TMac/Vujacic/Coby Karl
    3) TMac/Walton/Mo Evans/Radmanovic
    4) Odom/Turiaf/Cook/Landry
    5) Bynum/Mihm

    Houston
    1) Rafer/Kobe/SF3/ABrooks
    2) Kobe/Bonzi/SF3/Kirk
    3) Battier/Bonzi/Kirk/Novak
    4) Hayes/Scola/Kwame
    5) Yao/Dikembe/Kwame

just b/c of the sheer number of players, i think it keeps LA pretty competitive, and at the same time, i think it helps us get that much closer to being a championship team. with Yao, Battier, Hayes, and Scola, i think we have enough of a core to go deep during the playoffs.

it wasn't easy trading away SF3, Cat, and Cato for Tracy, Juwan, and change, but Tracy alone made the deal worth it. this will end up the same way.
