Lynne Cheney said she had discovered while doing family research for a new book that her husband and the Illinois senator were eighth cousins.

She said she traced a common ancestor of the two men to be a 17th century immigrant from France.

She described the connection as "amazing".

"This is such an amazing American story that one ancestor... could be responsible down the family line for lives that have taken such different and varied paths."

According to Mrs Cheney's spokeswoman, Mr Obama is distantly related to Mareen Duvall, whose son Samuel married the granddaughter of Mr Cheney's ancestor, also called Richard Cheney.

Mr Obama's spokesman, Bill Burton, responded to the news by saying: "Every family has a black sheep."

Mr Cheney, the brooding neo-conservative closely associated with the decision to invade Iraq, has little else in common with Mr Obama.

Mr Obama, the son of a Kenyan man and a white woman from Kansas, has earned epithets like "rock star" because of his popularity among young Democrats, and a reputation as a liberal because of his voting record in the Senate.

Who had the time and money to actually look through their family trees? And what was their motivation???

I don't fully understand what he meant by calling Chaney a "black sheep."

Saying he's an embarrasment to the family. I did find the wording a bit funny given the situation.

I think they were playing around saying obama is the black sheep bc they are all so conservative and hes liberal. since they were the ones who found he is part of their family.

The founder of an ancestry research tool that connected John Kerry and George W. Bush in 2004 says Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has an American pedigree connecting him to George Washington and James Madison – as well as Jimmy Carter and Quincy Jones.

Hawaii-based Millisecond Publishing Company, which was first to establish the cousin relationship between Bush and Kerry, says it has discovered Obama's maternal ancestors establish his relationship to a number of U.S. presidents.

"His exact relationships are calculations based on a wealth of fully sourced knowledge within the Family Forest®, our proprietary deep family history research tool," according to founder and president, Bruce H. Harrison. "On Friday we ran a search in the Family Forest® of the ancestors of the senator's mother, Ann Dunham, and as the data reached back through many centuries of recorded history, we made some surprising discoveries."

He said the software shows Dunham had deep roots in early colonial Virginia and New England, and some extending back for many centuries into Europe.

One of Obama's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfathers – dating back 12 generations – was the Hon. Laurence Washington, who built Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire, England. Over the course of five centuries, the historical record shows, he became the ancestor of President George Washington, General George S. Patton, Governor Adlai Stevenson, President Jimmy Carter and Quincy Jones, Jr.

"Of course, the Hon. Laurence Washington is also the ancestor of at least a million other living people including some very famous ones, but most are everyday folks," adds Harrison.
