MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves traded guard Trenton Hassell to the Dallas Mavericks for guard Greg Buckner on Friday night.

Hassell, who spent the last four seasons with the Wolves, averaged 6.7 points per game and three rebounds in 476 games. In 2006-07, he played in 76 games and averaged 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Buckner is an eight-year NBA veteran with career averages of 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds, including two stints with Dallas along with stops in Philadelphia and Denver. Last season, Buckner averaged four points while grabbing 2.1 rebounds.

The Timberwolves open their 2007-08 training camp Saturday.

Great trade by the Mavs. He's gonna help them out a lot more than Greg Buckner....

Seems like a lateral trade.... both are good on perimeter defense but not very good offensive players, Buckner has three-point range on his jumper but he has an extra year on his contract. Not sure what either team gains in this trade, Dallas loses a year off Buckner's contract but that's really not much.

that's a strong trade for dallas. i don't remember buckner having an impact anymore, and at the minimum, hassell will provide strong perimeter defense.

Thank God it wasn't for Barea. That's what the original reports in Minny were speculating.

I disagree....I think Buckner is much more valuable to the Mavs as a guy who can defend PG's ie..Nash, Parker (dare I even say Mike James and Steven Francis). Hassel seems a tad redundant when you already have a good mid-defender in Josh Howard. Harris and Terry routinely get torched. I think Buckner was a good role player for the Mavs.

Dude, Hassell is WAY better than Buckner.

Yeah Way Better....

Career Stats

Trenton Hassell
28mpg, .448 FG, .329 3pt, 76% FT, 6.7ppg, 3.2 reb, 2.7 assists

Greg Buckner
20mpg, .458 FG, .343 3pt, 79% FT, 5.5 ppg, 2.9 reb, 1.3 assists, 1 steal

Now where is the huge difference between these two players? The Mavs already have Josh Howard, Eddie Jones, and Devean George…what’s the point of adding Hassel? I think Buckner was a better fit on their roster as a defender of PG’s.

Bottom line is that Buckner was not the same after his injury. Buckner is a better 3 point shooter, but the Mavs already have so many that I'm not worried about that. Hassell is by far a better finisher and I think he will do well here. Throw some stats at me next year and we can finish this discussion. Right now I love what just happened and am glad Buckner's gone!

I'm happy for you Maverick fan-a trade like this will have little impact on either team

JEFF Van Gundy wishes he had handled the ending differently. He's clear about that part of the story.

"If I had it to do over again, I would not have taken time to reflect," he said. "I would have said right away that I wanted to coach."

If he'd just done that, the Rockets never would have interviewed Rick Adelman, and Van Gundy would still be coaching the team.

Mensa McHale traded a more servicable player IMHO for a guy with one more guaranteed year just to save @$800K this one season?

This trade ultimately amounts to jack- despite how ape***** some Mavs fans are about it. I'm going to love it when Trenton is put in the game against us. I've watched plenty of T-Wolves games on LP and this guy is every bit the POS Buckner is, except he can't shoot or defend smaller guards.
