I know he loves his country but he needs to defect. The fact that he's actually taking more time for personal matters proves that human nature demands freedom. No matter how long you've been taught that the state comes first. Once you get that first taste of freedom it's Kattie bar the door.

Am I allowed to like Chinese people and food, and hate their government? OK, I live in the USA, I guess I am. :D

I think I'm starting to understand why Wang Zhizhi refused to back to China, or as China would prefer to say, they banned him. :p Cut Yao some slack. He plays for an NBA team, the Chinese team, has had injuries, rehab, vigorous training programs, just got married, and just a tiny amount of Chinese and American media reporters out numbering the paparazzi that follow Paris Hilton around following and criticizing his every move since he came here.

Yao's had more pressure on him coming into the league than any other player in history from any sport. A billion Chinese people wanting him to dominate and at least tens of million Americans from other cities wanting him to fail.

Now he's a couple days late for camp! I really do hope they ban him. We all know it would help his game in the long run. Next in line would be Yi Jianlian if he ever laces up his tennis shoes for an NBA team. He's losing endoresments everyday he doesn't sign. Some other rookie as gonna get a T-Mobile personalized sidekick or Gatorade contract if he doesn't sign or get traded then sign soon.

Most of Chinese do, i don't see why we can't? I seriously doubt the number of poor people in China that outnumber our entire population wouldn't prefer a democracy.

I have been lurking long enough but as a Chinese Rox fan I must clarify the situation.

Yes, the article from the China Sports Daily is written by one of its senior journalists. But the article is published on a page called "Your opinions", not on the front page or basketball sections. It's only the guy's personal opinion, nothing offical. There is no indication that the Chinese sports association or basketball association is unhappy about Yao's absence yet.

So, just don't blaming the communists right away. It's still too early. Please take the article with a grain of salt.

Personally I don't believe the Chinese sports association will be stupid enough to really criticize Yao. Not before 2008, at least.

Screw his newspaper, and his government. They treated his parents like dirt after they retired, and Yao busts his ass playing 10 months a year to make everyone happy.

Actually the true poor people (those in the countryside) might want to take a step back return to the old more socialistic standard. They are being hit hard by capitalism and modernization, the widening gap between the have and have nots is something I see as a major challenge for China going forward.

    here's Yao's response:
"not much I can do about some people voicing their opinions. this is the 10th year I've been in the Chinese NT. Everybody can see my attitudes(toward the NT), past, present and future. I don't wanna explain further."

Thank you. Not every article written in China is a government approved statement. It's not the 60s any more. It's 2007.

So the first line in the article is wrong?

    it says...

"China's official sports association has issued an unprecedented public criticism of Yao Ming for reporting late to national team training."

I believe you, I just wanted to clarify. Lord knows US journalist have gotten things wrong in the past. :)

It's not about freedom. It's about trust.

The article doesn't represent official stance, it's just an article expressing doubts in a roundabout way regarding Yao's availibility. Nobody knows what exactuly Yao and CNT agreed upon when the CBA released him. Is it a full time come on demand national duty? or is it an obiligation with certain restrictions. The article failed to touch on this key issue.

When Dream was doubted to fake an injury, it was an issue about trust.
It is a ridiculous article that's uncalled without substance to back up the doubts between the lines.

To be honest, being a Yao fan I do find his shoulder injury kind of out of the blue. Not saying there's anything wrong with Yao, the context makes it more understandble about a b**** like the CBA starts b****ing.

First of all, the article didn't criticize in a straight forward way about Yao reporting late. Second, it does not officially represent the sports association. Although the basic tone is first approved by officials I think. It's like one of the leaks from the Bush government by one of their media associates. You know it's their stance, but it's not official.

Say Yao keeps on reporting late and displeases the CNT or Goverment or whoever it is that's in charge.. and they decide to ban him. Does that mean he's banned from playing for the CNT or all basketball (including Rockets ball)?

Does the Chinese government have the right to deny Yao from playing for the NBA if they are supremely upset with him? Or do they have to honor Yao's contract and let him play?

Seems some sports officials are whining... in fact, I think CNT's coach had been whining about missing players (both Yao and Lakers draftee Sun Yue -- when he stayed in the U.S, working out for NBA teams rather than joining the national team). Yao himself is taking the high road, I'll bet if there is a fight, his agent will be the ones handling the attacks.

Thanks for the clarification! :) I sort of figured it wasn't official from dazzles post but was confused by the wording in the original article.

Not sure about banning him now, I think it still takes nth times of escalation for the CNT or sports association to make that decision. If they decides to ban him, it'll be Yao straight up refuses to report. I would say the two things they can do is to boycott Yao's games on China's TV, which will make them the b****es of millions of Yao fans. Another is banning Yao to play on the CNT. But they'd leave the door open for Yao to come back. They need Yao, they know it.

I don't think the sports association is the hot shot among Chinese government branches. They have no power to ban Yao's career as a basketball player. Numerous Chinese athletes defects and go abroad playing the opposing countries and they can do nothing about it.

Yes it's wrong. Actually that Chinese Sports News senior journalist Ma Yihua is a quite influential guy. And his wife is a senior officer in charge of publicity in the Chinese sports association and the Beijing Olympics committee. However, being influential does not necessarily mean he can represent the official sports association.

BTW, you can't really blame the US journalists on this error. The Chinese website that reported this used lots of misleading expressions, emphasizing "the paper is owned by the government's All-China Sports Federation" several times. My guess is that they want to hype the news up and gain some traffics.

Fxxk the CBA officials. Yao trainning alone is 1000 times better than playing in YMCA level games. The CNT in summer league got blown out on average 20+ points by NBA wannabes. Morons. They want Yao to join because losing to the sucky teams make them look bad.
