Hi guys. I was just curious if anyone else is wondering what the new team name will be. As far as the popular ones. My favorites are the Wildcatters and the Apollo's, but I'm still hopeful for something better. My personal choice is:

Houston 36er's or Battler's- (1836-year Texas was a Country)--Midnight Blue with Red trim and the logo should be an image of a ragged bleeding Soldier with his sword held high in the air among tiny stars scattered all around the helmet, proclaiming victory.

Let me know what you would like the team name to be.

I still say the the "Rattle Snakes" is the best. Not only from a name perspective, but a marketing one too. Not to mention that it still fits into the 'Texan'/western theme.

Here's what a few headlines could look like in the future:

Houston Rattlers shed their skin, finish first winning season at 10 - 6.

The Rattlers sink their fangs into defending conference champs Steelers.

Rattler venom deadly for Chiefs.

Titans feel the Rattler bite, lose 32 - 10.

Just think what the helmet would look like, a rattle snake with his mouth opened and tongue sticking out. Also, the home endzone would be called the "Snake Pit". And, at the stadium the vendors would sell snake-like rattles for the fans to shake during the game. And, with a name like Rattle Snakes, you could still put "Rattlers" on the jerseys and have the media refer to them in that way. (Knickerbockers = Knicks, Super Sonics = Sonics, Metropolitans = Mets)

Well, my fav has always been the "Texans," cause, well, there's nothing cooler or tougher than a Texan.

Fatty-
I like 36er's. Never considered something like that, but I sounds cool.

I am a native Texan, lived here all my life, but to have that as the name of our professional football team is just way too general.

What would the helmet look like?

What would the mascot be?

What would the team colors be based on?

How does it sound? The Houston Texans???

Just imagine: the Detroit Michigans, the Oklahoma City, Oklahomans, the New York New Yorkers....

Wildcatters?
Um, no.

Hurricanes?
Maybe.

Not Apollo's, but Apollo.
Uuuuuuuuuuu, nah.

Texans.
Horrible! Just horrible. Bad idea marketing wise.

Rattlers?
Hmmmm, now that's a possibility.

Why do we have to have a western theme??

What about the Houston Nova? Still think I like the Rattlers.

I was thinking of a space theme like the Galaxy. Even Nova sounds good. I hope the team doesn't sign a contract with Nike. Go with Puma.

Astros, Rockets, Comets, Galaxy, future NHL team...Space City Pro Teams....awesome.

Rocket, Astros, Aeros the space theme has been done to death. The only Texas-themed team has been the Oilers (and the .45s sort of) and they are gone. The Texans was the first name of the Cowboys unfortunately, but who remembers them? McNair reportedly likes the names Texans and Toros, with his favorite being the former.

I've been overseas and being from Texas makes quite an impression. The TV show Dallas still runs in England and aross Europe. To say the name is general is wrong. Like it or not, the impression of Texas is the cowboy, but I think it would make a strong theme. A school (don't know where) has a mascot that looks like an oil tycoon.

Aikman and Emmit etc are old, they won't be around forever, and some people might be tired of cheering for the Cowboys. I think it would garner plenty of fan interest and show that Houston is as Texas as anybody else in this state. People tired of Houston not getting any respect? could help.

That and I just like the damn name.

I like Wildcatters, although it might take some explaining to some as to what a Wildcatter is in relation to the Oil industry.

However, one name that should be right up there is hardly even mentioned, and props go out to my bud Todd the Bod on the AstrosConnection BBS for bringing it back up:

The Houston Gamblers

Maybe we could bring Jim Kelly and Jack Pardee back as coaches!

Building off of my last post in this thread, a name like Texans could bring in fans from all over the state, not just Houston and the surrounding areas. This state is full of marketing, people. Its not general at all. I think animal names (i.e. Wildcats, Rattlesnakes, etc.) are a lot more general than Texans.

However, I'm not opposed to a different name. I also like:

The Houston Generals
As in General Sam Houston

The Houston 36er's
As in 1836, the year Texas declared her independence.

Even the Houston Alamos would work
As in the "Remember the Alamo" battle cry at San Jacinto when Sam Houston and so many others beat the hell out of Santa Anna.

I'm just tired of the space theme. Houston has more to offer than just NASA.

How about the Houston Violence? That way, when the team sucks for the first three years, we can at least be treated to some positive headlines:

"Violence Falls Again"

"McNair Overcomes Violence With Late Heroics"

"Playoffs Will Be Violence-Free"

And when, as Freak points out, the team leaves Houston for Los Angeles?

"Los Angeles Embraces Violence; 'Violence is a way of life,' says Mayor".

What's not to like?

Of the names already posted, I liked Gamblers (good ol' usfl) and Hurricanes. Texans is just lame. I also like the Houston Humidity (I mean Miami's got the Heat) and the Houston Horsepower.

Man these names are just horrible!

Why does tradition and geography HAVE to play a role? It has little relevance in most other cities.

Give this team a name like the Texas, Drillers, or Generals and we will be the laughing stock of the NFL.

Don't you guys and gals want a name that is intimidating and powerful? Something original?

C'mon, let's get creative.

BK,

Sorry, but due to the recent murder charges filed against current NFL players, I'll bet a name like the "Violence" won't pass.

On the Gamblers name. I actually prefer that one. But as someone pointed out many moons ago, the NFL won't allow a new team to name itself anything that has to do with gambling. (unfortunately)

So what is wrong with Texans and/or Generals? At least they make sense and sound good. What does Gamblers have to do with anything in Houston? The NFL wouldn't allow that one anyway. Gamblig has never been legal here, there may have been some casinos in Galveston, but 1) thats in Galveston and 2) It wasn't legal in the first place.

Hey Pimp-
Tradition, geography and location is important in our case. Are you from Texas? If so, have you ever traveled?

I've already stated the impression Texas has across the world. I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging, but I've been very fortunate to have traveled a good portion of the world. In my travels, I always go to a near-by pub and talk to people. You tell them your an American and it will catch their interest, tell them you're from Texas and their eyes positively light up. There has been several occasions when I didn't pay for a single drink (even food) because everyone wanted to talk to the guy from Texas. Word was passed around the bar, I wasn't wearing a cowboy hat and chaps with my horse (don't have one) tied up outside. I went in dressed like a normal person: slacks and collar, jeans and t-shirt, whatever. I never even wear a baseball cap because of the negative images of ball caps over there.

So as for tradition and geography, while they may not play as big a role as they do elsewhere, they are huge in Texas. Our state even looks cool on a map. It is quite possibly the most recognizable land mass on a map.

Anyway, I think Texans is intimidating and powerful. As far as being original, we're the only place that could get away with naming ourselves after ourselves
