My father, as you may know, is an artist, and he's doing his first show in a long while (in Houston anyway -- he had some stuff showing in Telleride and in France) and I invite everyone to come visit. I know we generally keep business out of the BBS, but this is more of a free cultural event than it is a business. I just want my father to get as good a turnout opening night as we can muster. He doesn't show often anymore, because he misses his paintings when they sell, but he does like to show off his work. (If I have violated the code, my sincere apologies.) It is at Gallery Cherqui 2314 Dunlavy Houston TX 77006 (map) in the Montrose area. The opening is on April 26th. The work will be there for several weeks at least, but on opening night, you'll be sure to meet my father, who is a great bull****ter, and they usually have free champagne and canapes or something like that (I don't know the particulars regarding food and drink at this particular opening). I'd give you a CF.net discount, but it is already free. I'll be there some portion of the evening chasing around a 2-year old (unless my wife is in labor). It is also the first event at this gallery, I believe. The owner, Albert Cherqui, is a veteran gallery owner (I think his last place might have been called something like Albert's). He's a pretty interesting guy himself. He designed the gallery, which I understand has some pretty interesting architecture (I've only seen it from the street, and it looks kinda cool). Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of internet resources to point you to. My father has a blog that I try to update for him (but I never have time) that has a couple of pictures of his work: http://engafford.blogspot.com/. Of the paintings there, I think Burkha will be at the show. I'll probably add a couple images of other paintings at the show in the next couple of days. I don't think the gallery has a website yet (I couldn't find it).
Time: 6 to 9 pm, April 26th I managed to put the invite on the blog, which has two smallish images of paintings that will be at the show.
Show is today. Bring a girl and try to impress her by making her think you know something about art. Cheap date, since the booze is free.* Here's the invite (if I can manage to post a picture): * but tipping the bartender would be classy. I'll be there if I'm not in the hospital welcoming my second daughter.
But what about the posters who don't care about basketball? The game starts at 8. Show starts at 6. I understand from my father that art shows traditionally are always on Thursday nights. Plus, he's not much of a basketball fan, so I don't think that featured prominently in his thinking. Anyway, come to the show if you can make it. Live sports bar isn't too far away.
Normally I can skip out of work early, but I'm having to do something at 7:30. It sucks because that's literally right around the corner from where Buck Turgidson and I are going to watch the game.
Cool, then I'll know who you are. You won't get tossed out or anything, but you might be underdressed.
WOW, very impressive JV.. Your father is really good IMO, his Persecution painting is truly awesome for lack of a better word..
Sorry to revive the thread. I have another invitation (the last I'm sure) for everyone. This is for an artist who is the son of a friend of my father's. He's been painting for a while, but this is his first show. So, if you can come out next Thursday, come on out. Thursday, June 28th 6 - 9 pm Gallery Cherqui 2314 Dunlavy He's been a sign-painter for a long time, so most of the work is painted on sign board with acrylic and enamel paints. He gets texture on his board by starting with the discarded skin from the top of a paint-can, so he gets some randomness in there, Arp-like (I find processes of making art to be interesting). All the stuff in the show is of similar character to the one on the invite. He does a lot of intricate detail work. Most of the pieces are pretty small -- a foot or two in each direction. Davidoff, I didn't read your last message before this thread died the last time. Thanks. Persecution is a very special painting to the family. It was his first commissioned painting and was the painting that convinced my father's father that he should pursue being an artist. And, when it was painted in the early '60s it was extremely controversial. It's hanging in my hallway now.
