I so sick of the freakin double standard, if a white man said the same thing about a group of black people he'd be fired im, uh oh wait.
IMUS: So, I watched the basketball game last night between -- a little bit of Rutgers and Tennessee, the women's final. ROSENBERG: Yeah, Tennessee won last night -- seventh championship for [Tennessee coach] Pat Summitt, I-Man. They beat Rutgers by 13 points. IMUS: That's some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and -- McGUIRK: Some hard-core hos. IMUS: That's some nappy-headed hos there. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some -- woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like -- kinda like -- I don't know. McGUIRK: A Spike Lee thing. IMUS: Yeah. McGUIRK: The Jigaboos vs. the Wannabes -- that movie that he had. IMUS: Yeah, it was a tough -- McCORD: Do The Right Thing. McGUIRK: Yeah, yeah, yeah. IMUS: I don't know if I'd have wanted to beat Rutgers or not, but they did, right? ROSENBERG: It was a tough watch. The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors. IMUS: Well, I guess, yeah. RUFFINO: Only tougher. McGUIRK: The [Memphis] Grizzlies would be more appropriate. http://www.atrios.blogspot.com/
its a freaking joke. such a non story. Last night i saw some young black lady talking about how wrong it is and how he should be fired and how the word 'nappy' is racist. THen she says that the degrating of black women has to stop and imus should pay for what he said. Sure, she mentioned rappers in general but was focused on imus. HELLO??!?!! if you are really against the degrating of black women all you should be doing is talking about rappers and such. what a moron. These snakes just sense a photo shoot and some TV time so they crawl out from under their rocks.
I think I agree with you, mostly on this. I think people should be able to tell schtick from real racism. It lessens the importance of stomping out real racism. However it might be ok for NBC to decide they don't want that kind schtick on the radio.
You know the thing is, until all this media storm over the apology, I bet 95% of Americans didn't know about it or hear Imus say it. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that a large number didn't even know who or what Imus is. What I still don't understand is why people on both sides make a huge ordeal about something that nobody would have known about otherwise. You're giving the other time publicity that they wouldn't have had.
Of course, the difference between Imus and rap is huge. Rap, while being offensive to me both musically and lyrically, does not (usually) single out an individual or a group. When rappers talk about "hos" and such, you don't think it's you or anyone you know. I believe Chris Rock had a bit about this where church lady types could sing along with misogynist rappers and not think it applied to them. With Imus, he is not making a generalization. He is not playing to a stereotype or an image. He is specific in his use of "nappy-headed hos." It only applies to the black women on the Rutgers basketball team. Look at it this way... If Another Brother gets on TV and makes a joke about how insecure or uneducated Texans are, it's no big deal. If he gets on and says what an insecure, uneducated guy DonkeyMagic is, then it's a much different story. The general vs. the particular makes all the difference in this case.
If the standard being used were applied to all radio commentators and comedians, I think only 2-3 would be left. And who the heck is Al friggin' Sharpton to be taking Imus to task. Sharpton isn't exactly an angel... he's said far more controversial things than calling people nappy headed ho's. Generally, he's made a cottage industry out of racial extortion. I'd like to hear Another Brother's take on the issue, since he uses a lot of racial topics in his comedy act.
yeah, when they said 'nappy' was racist i had to turn the channel. more reason to take that guys advice and not watch t.v. i agree that if nbc doesnt want that type of schtick anymore then they can change it. But this is imus and he's been around a long time...they know what they are getting. Like i said, its just something to be blown out of proportion so people like sharpton can get some face time. every listen to walton and johnson? if this was actually news worthy, then walton and johnson would be in the national news daily.
Imus isn't helping himself by constantly apologizing. Issue one formal apology and be done with it. And if Rev. Jackson or Rev. Sharpton won't back off, just throw "Hymietown" and the Tawana Brawley incident in their respective faces and tell them they're in no position to be lecturing anyone on racial sensitivity. The fact that the media are allowing those two to call for Imus' firing and no one will even mention their past indiscretions is pathetic.
With everything else going on in the world today, we're really supposed to care about THIS?? Perfect example of why I avoid the cable "news" networks like the plague.
I give Imus a lot of credit for apologizing and addressing the issue. I don't think Imus should be fired or suspended for what he said but I don't see any problem with calling him on it. To his great credit he addressed it and even voluntarily went on air and faced his critics.
racist! they're about to announce the father of anna nicole's baby!! of course its pasted all over the tv like it actually means something...and people wonder whats wrong with this country. but i do agree imus has handled it well, even though i've never been a fan. However, at some point he needs to stop puckering up
