Congratulations Madame Speaker!

Pelosi becomes first woman House speaker

The 110th Congress has officially elected Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as Speaker of the House, making her the first woman in U.S. history to hold the position.

Yes, Congressman Ellison was sworn in on a Koran owned by Thomas Jefferson. But the ceremony was private, as is all swearing in ceremonies. There is a public ceremony, but no one is sworn in using any religious text.

Someone mentioned before that they believed that all gov officials should be sworn in using a copy of the constitution, I agree.

That's not what a Jew would use. He would use a bound copy of the Old Testament...a Hebrew prayer book.

They are the same thing, except Jews don't call it the Old Testament.

I'm pretty sure that there are no records on what Congressmen use to swear in. But there is that record for Presidents. 41 Presidents have sworn in on a Bible. Teddy Roosevelt didn't use a book, and John Quincy Adams swore in on a law book.

I'd rather they swore on something they believed in.

then it would be a really sad state of affairs in this country if elected officials didn't believe in the constitution.

They may be bad, but it is almost impossible that they could be the same.

i wasn't sure if this should be a new thread or not... this does apply to the 110th.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4449732.html
House Dems already changing budget rules

Quote:
WASHINGTON — The House, in its second day of Democratic reign, changed budget rules that have allowed deficits to swell with lawmakers' pet projects and President Bush's tax cuts...

One rule requires that tax cuts have corresponding cuts in government spending or tax increases elsewhere to pay for them. Likewise, any increase in entitlement programs like Medicare would have to have corresponding tax increases, or equal cuts in other government programs, under the pay-as-you-go rule reinstated today. It was adopted 280-154...

"This is putting the American taxpayer on a collision course with higher taxes," said Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, top Republican on the Budget Committee.

"Today, we are cutting our national credit card," countered Heath Shuler, D-N.C., during floor debate today. To underscore the point, Shuler cut a credit card in half at a news conference populated by moderate-to-conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats who are most responsible for implementing the rule.
atleast reply and tell me if this makes me a blue dog, because i am all for this. anytime you keep yourself accountable for spending money, its a good thing. even if this means slashing programs, or raising taxes... getting the budget balanced and the defecit under control is almost as important as keeping ourselves from getting blown up by al queda.
