All the video game awards being put out by the various media outlets made me wonder what my fellow CF members thought about the games that came out in 2006. A lot of great games came out this year, including Zelda, FFXII, Oblivion, Gears of War, Okami, Company of Heroes, GH2, GRAW, Wii Sports, NSMB, MGSO, Castlevania, Medieval II: Total War, and many more. I think it would be interesting if the members here came to our own conclusion on which game was the best. I liked the system used on the NeoGAF forums for picking a GOTY which I'd like to use here (found here). Basically, you have to list a minimum of 3 games and a max of 10 games that you think deserve GOTY (and in that order). I only plan on listing 4-5 games at most myself, and I'm guessing most people have the same idea in mind. That said, I like the flexibility the 10 spots give. For example, if you did this: 1. Zelda 2. Wii Sports 9. Madden 07 Zelda would get 10 points, Wii Sports 9, and Madden 07 2 (instead of 10, 9, and 8, putting Madden on nearly the same level as Zelda and Wii Sports). These points will be added up, and the game with the most points will be declared the CF GOTY for 2006...though I don't really have a time limit or anything like that in mind, so I don't know if there will actually be a formal declaration. I would have made this sooner, but I needed to get some more play time with some games before coming to my own conclusion. I still need some more time actually, so I won't post my list until later. I'll try to keep track of the points by either posting updates or editing updates into a post (maybe this one?). I think there is a time limit for editing a post (don't remember what it is), so I don't know for sure which one I'll do (if this thread is still active after a couple of days, a new post might be required). I might also post things like Best Wii Game, Best RPG, Best Handheld Game, etc., based on the points, which is why you might want to list several games. You obviously have not seen what Wii Sports has done to engage the casual gamer. It's a candidate for game of the year exactly BECAUSE it doesn't appeal to just the hardcore gamer.
1) Oblivion 5) Gears of War 10) Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Oblivion pretty much kept me from playing other games until Gears came out.
Sure, that is something that elevates the game however I cannot believe that anyone who would say it is even in the top 5 (much less second) has plaid many other titles this year. It is innovating however that is only one factor of many to consider.
If you do not wish to list your list of games in any particular order, I will assume an order when I calculate the points later. I may just be lazy and calculate it normally (first game listed gets most points), or I might give them 1pt each or something. Or, maybe a better thing would be to use their Metacritic/Gamerankings scores as a tiebreaker. So if you had this: Wii Sports Zelda Madden Gears of War Zelda would get 10, GOW 9, Wii Sports 8, and Madden 7 (IIRC). I recommend ordering your list as much as possible unless you want me deciding how the points get distributed (which kind of defeats the purpose, although I don't have a problem doing that). I know this is more complicated than it probably should be, but I think it would work better in the end (especially if we can use the points to come up with a decent list of winners in other categories). FWIW, the list I used in the OP was just an example to explain the process. I haven't even played any of those games, so they're not even on my own personal list.
1. Zelda 4(tie). Oblivion 4(tie). Company of Heroes 7. Wii Sports I would really have to say WoW was my GOY because it took up the majority of my time. But since it wasn't released in '06 I really feel it doesn't qualify,even though I have seen some publications mention it as a candidate.
I've got my wife, two best friends, and in-laws sore from playing that stuff. The last two nights, 4 of us played 'til around 3 in the morning.....addicting. .....oh, yeah........I hurt.
I haven't played all these games in depth, but I've played them enough. There's some other games I'm interested in that I haven't gotten to, like Valkyrie Profile 2, Grandia 3, that Persona action rpg whose name eludes me, and Disgaea 2. Also haven't tried any next gen games obviously. 1. Zelda : Twighlight Princess(GC) 2. Tales of the Abyss 3. MGS Subsistence 4. Kingdom Hearts 2 5. Okami 6. FF12 7. Tales of Legendia 8. Bully I was looking at some of the "better" releases for the GC this year. Yikes, what a bunch of crap. Don't think there was much the year before that either, other than RE4 in like January 05.
