This board needs its spirits uplifted:

Don't look now but after this game Yao is averaging:

27 pts, 10 boards, 2 blocks, on 52% shooting

Olajuwon's best year:

27.8 pts, 10.8 boards, 3 blocks, 52% shooting

I m not a Yao hater but enough is enough!!!

There are millions threads about yao's performance this season, discussion like
Yao is the best center,
Yao for MVP,
Yao for POM
Yao should win the POW,
Yao is as good as Olajuwon etc
kind of threads are meaningless and in fact it jinx the rockets.

Every time there are these similiar kind of threads poppin out in the forum, the rockets lost the game!

Yao wont be MVP, POM, POW if the rockets is having losing records!

Nice find! Anyway it took The Dream 10 yrs to win an NBA title! So patience is the key, Yao needs smart, hard working blue collar type players along with a couple of semi -stars to bring a title home, with or without T-Mac!

Statistically, this might have been Olaj's best season:

1993- 26.1 ppg, 52.8% FG, 13.0 REBs, 4.2 blocks, 3.5 AST, 1.8 STL, 77% FT

or maybe this:

1990- 24.3 ppg, 50% FG, 14.0 REBs, 4.6 blocks , 2.9 AST, 2.1 STL, 72% FT

I could see Yao surpassing Olajuwon in offensive statstics. But I don't see him getting 13+ rebs, 4+ blocks and 2+ steals.

I also think yao is reaching the great status of Olajuwon. he's numbers are just extraordinary since tracy has been out. something like 33 points 11 boards 3 blocks. thats just insane..n the opnly thing seperating them is olajuwon probaly had bit more agility and better post moves. he also had alot better anticipation on defense. on offense in my opinion yao is just as good.

Exactly. if anything yao is a more talented and better offensive player. but the dream was alot better at reading the play on the defensive end. he is'nt the alltime leading shotblock getter for nothing?

First thing that came to mind when I opened the thread. The original poster's comparison conveniently left out assists/steals/blocks and was also from Dream's lowest rebounding year before his overall steady decline. Misleading information to say the least, but offensively Yao could conceivably surpass Hakeem. The points are well on their way and the assists are slowly climbing as well. It took Hakeem 9 seasons to achieve 3+ assists and once he got there he sustained that production for 6 years straight. Surround Yao with capable shooters and yes, I believe he surpasses Hakeem eventually on offense (at least at his peak). He's already started to have a similar impact.

Can't agree more! Yao is good, but he needs the support from his teammates, he has to lead us to more big wins, then he will be qualified as MVP or something else.
If Rox keep loosing games, no matter how good the stats Yao gets, he will get nothing.
A MVP must carry his team to keep fighting and beat the enemy, as TD and SN does. Yao has to take more responsibility and make his teammate better. And I have faith in him.
BTW, I am a Yao fan, but not a YOF.

I can't image what more he's supposed do to support the team.
thinking about the last 5 games he played, considering the team's situation, with t-mac and synder's injures, that making rockets to keep wining and win the title means Yao should improve his play a lot.it seems impossible for a human being.

i think skillwise, yao is at the MVP level, but he is still learnig how to be a real leader, how to deal with double/triple teams, how to get teammate involved, how to deal with refs, how to magage his energy in the whole game, and how to deal with his own coach.

that's the scary part of yao, you look at a 26/10/3 guy, and you know he still can get much better.
