    Well,

I am sure you guys have seen Ric and myself along with others go back and forth about whether a player can raise the level of play of their entire team by being a leader and having the winning intangibles.

Our arguments have been primarily about Vince Young, but several people in all walks of life have motivated and raised the level of play or experience throughout history.

So, I am going to put this to a poll. Taking Vince Young into the argument as a matter of context.

I contend that his team plays harder for him, and that he elevates their play. I feel that they never feel out of a game, and will play at their utmost abilities longer because of having a leader like Vince Young on the field.

Ric contends that the players will play just as hard with or without him.

    So, what say you?

Did the Titans play as hard for Kerry Collins?

Do the Texan's play hard for David Carr?

    :D

I would put in the D&D, but it is about the Texans and sports in general, I think it fits here.

You didn't even mention a Texan in your post. And there's already a thread about intangibles.

Why? Wasn't your soul touched by the almightiness of Vince Young? You know the guy who was only able to use his intangibles to beat the mighty Houston Texans in OT?

I refuse to vote until it's in the correct forum. Just a reminder, Vince Young is not a Houston Texan, Houston Astro or a Houston Comet. Even though he would be able to be all three because he's so b****in'!

The poll is about whether intangibles exist, and whether they are important to the Texans.

    But whatever, GO Astros !

i contend absolutely nothing. i do, however, object to your assertion that a single player can make others "elevate" their game.

and your poll is lance bass.

is this honestly what you think? that if vince young was here, ron dayne would be a 1,500-yard back? that jameel cook wouldn't fumble? repeatedly? that andre johnson would actually make a play every now and then? that salaam and/or winston would actually pass-block effectively? that demarcus faggins would have actually covered lee evans? that the defense as a whole would have risen to the occassion and stopped jp losman? chad pennington?

this is why some of us grow tired of this - yes, carr is a problem, or, more accurately, he's not part of the solution. but it sure as **** sake's isn't his fault that the team around him sucks. for the love of god.......

I like how it says Poll in the front, telling us that it's a poll, and then DaDakota puts poll at the end like we didn't know it was a poll.

    That's awesome man.

Yes, absolutely I am saying that Vince or any other leader would get those guys playing harder.

Pumped up, more active, more aggressive, YES...a RESOUNDING YES !!!!!

Maybe not to the numbers you are quoting but I have no doubt they would play harder if Vince was QB instead of Carr.

Wow, this is a question on whether a player can elevate his team or whether they definitively cannot do that.

So basically anything from elevating your team by "I think someone can elevate their teammates by .000000000000000001%" all the way to "I think someone can make their teammates 100% better than they normally would be" falls under the "Yes" category.

Sorry, stupid poll... just b/c of course the answers will be skewed towards the Yes's. It's almost impossible to disagree with logically. I mean, even if you don't agree with most of this stuff, you have to think that you a good leader can help at least 1 person's confidence just the slightest bit and help him be one one-millionth better of a player..

Where did anyone say anything like that? The fact that you have to distort what people are saying into your own imaginary absurdity to contradict it says a lot.

This is a more reasonable view.

Some (including DD) make VY out to be a god. That by having VY in, the players block better, make less mistakes, catch better. At least that is what I read from them. VY has the ability to make plays by using his own athletism, but also has the mental ability to adjust during the play and throw to an open man. That's not a common trait amongst most NFL QB's.

VY only makes those around him better, when he gives the players around him the opportunity to make plays. The same goes for Bush and Mario. If Bush's game is on, DB's will favor him and free up someone else. If Mario demands 2 guys to contain him, another player will have an opportunity to make a play. I think that a dominant DE can impact more players on any given play than a QB. However, the players around him have to be capable of making plays. If a DE is a solid pass-rusher and run-stopper and he complements his line, he adds pressure to the passing game, improving the DB play-ability and stuffs the run, improving the LB play-ability.

VY finished the game like he has finished many games; By taking the ball to the house. That's what he does best. I thought VY's protection was decent that day. We wasn't able to put enough pressure on him to force mistakes.

Keep in mind that the Texans are not exactly a great team. Beating the Texans in OT is not exactly an amazing thing, given our current roster and injuries.

if you watched magic johnson, you know some players get more out of their teammates than others.

if you watched john elway, you know some players get more out of their teammates than others.

sports, like anything else, has a mental aspect to it. confidence is important. attitude is important. some people are able to lead. others are not.

honestly, i can't believe we're even having this discussion. please...go to every business school in the country and inform them that the personality and leadership qualities of managers are unimportant. let them know that these things are soft intangibles that count for nothing.
