Are we still interested in Bonzi at this point?

What could we offer? I've heard perhaps Bonzi S&T for 1 yr for 4.3 Mi for the TPE. Then, as the sweetner for Sac, Head for Jason Hart... thoughts?

wow, if we can get it done, go for it. we can have our third scorer or great firepower off the bench. Plus this can be our insurance against Tracy McGrady getting hurt.

The problem is that the only way we'll be able to afford him next year is if he sucks this year, in which case we don't want him anyway.

It's short-sighted. The Rockets would be getting a 1-year player rental for a quality young guard. If they do get Bonzi, he'll treat them just like he did the Kings this year. I'd forgive it in a heart beat if the Rockets win a championship. But Head's going to be a good guard.

well if its a sign and trade, i'd imagine it would be for longer than 1 year.

First, the Rockets are only giving up their 4.2mil TE. And we gotta use it or lose it. Mind as well use it on Wells, if you can.

Second, since it is a sign and trade, I assume the Rockets would want to extend the contract for more than one year. If they can, it wouldn't be so short-sighted. Even if we DID sign him for one year, we'd have his Bird rights so nobody could beat our offer next summer.

Not bad. He's a headcase but we have too many nice guys anyway. Do it if you can.

Downside is his outside shot isn't great.

EDIT: I said MLE originally but actually we'd use our 4.2mil TE. I doubt we could sign him to the 2.1 MLE we have left.

Bring on Bonzi,so long as we don't have to give up too much value.
I really want a PF that can give us 20 - 25 minutes/game.Bonzi and a role player that can get some time at the 4 would put us right there.

I don't know. I suppose that as long as they manage to sign him to a contract that will not make it impossible to trade him later, then it's probably worth a shot; if nothing else than for trying to turn him into an asset that other teams might be willing to part with value to get, AND be willing to take on Howard's contract as part of the deal.

Problem is, if he were to be playing well enough that he would actually become that valuable, then there would be a strong urge to try to keep him here. But I seriously doubt that Bonzi is ever going to get one of those huge contracts from any team that already has two maxed-out players signed long-term. Puts us in a more difficult negotiating position.

Sad truth is, we probably get bit in the a$$ no matter how we try to play it, if we do manage to sign the guy.

My gut says stay away, but if we pick him up, I won't cry about it.

So whats the big deal if we only rent him for a year? He will help or team very much, help us pass the first round and put Houston back on the map as a hot new market for Free Agents.

Even if we did clear up space to resign him next year, I would not. The 07 Free agent class is tremendous. Rashard, Chauncey, Bibby etc..
I would make a run at them, not Bonzi.

I hope we get Jason Hart. He's a good point guard.

I totally agree. I'm pretty much sold on Bonzi if we get him for dirt cheap, like using that 2.1 of the MLE on him. Then again, if we want to focus on getting someone good next year, we have to be a successful and attractive team to come play for this year. And bonzi will definetly help that out. so who knows. I think it'd be best for both sides to have him play for one year.

Is this for real!!?? Hell yea!!! Then dump Jacobsen and Azubuike. I wouldn't waste another second. But that is still an assload of guards. Alston, Head, Lucas, Span, TMac, Snyder, Wells. Since it's either use it or lose it we might as well go thru with it ONLY IF we don't get some kind of PF upgrade. Out of those 7 guys, Lucas, and Span will see several DNP's. Head and Snyder might get around 15-20 min, Alston gets 25-30 and Bonzi sees 25-30 min of backup time. Put in Shane at PF for certain streches and we ready to roll.

    this summer

    - bonzi will sign a one year deal.

    - bonzi will test the FA market next summer.

    - bonzi will find that next summers FA pool will force him to settle for the MLE.

    - bonzi will decide that since he has a couple MLE offers he wants to go to (or stay with) a winning team that has a starting spot with his name on it.

    ------------

now, i hope the rockets sign him since they are beyond lucky that this guy might just fall into thier laps.

    next summer

    - the rockets MLE offer will be as good as any.
    - his playing time in houston will be as good as any.
    - the chance of a championship will be as good as any.

A year ago, I would have said "not no, but HELL no." Now, I'd be happy if they made it happen. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want the team not to suck this year.

You mean, he'll put up career numbers because he's in a contract year? Only we're not married to his malcontent ass because some other team will lock him up to an overpriced contract next year?

Yeah, I'd hate to be treated like that.

i would love to get bonzi for a 1 year rental. i doubt he would be a problem since he would be playing for a really big contract. plus you would have a really motivated player. trade head or whatever. head is not a difference maker and bonzi wells can be a difference maker. get it done somehow.

A 4.2 million TE and the knowledge that a WC rival just picked up a headcase isn't compensation enough for Sacramento? I think the sweetner should be something more like the option to swap second round picks next year.
