article lists the top 10 guys who should have won an MVP before but never have. Biggio at #3

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=schoenfield/060818

    3. Craig Biggio
Best finish in MVP voting: fourth (1997)

At his peak, the guy did everything well: get on base, hit for power despite playing in the Grand Canyon, steal bases, get hit by pitches, win Gold Gloves. He'd never get hurt, but always had the dirtiest uniform on the field. In '97, he grounded into zero double plays. The year Pudge Rodriguez won the MVP, he grounded into 31. Just sayin'.

the 50 stolen bases/50 doubles thing in 1998 was just amazing.

Also locks him into the Hall. Although he'll play to 3k hits just to be sure.

Not sure what jersey he'll wear, though.

BTW, has anyone gone into the hall yet wearing a Star jersey?

Biggio will be the first player to go into Cooperstown wearing a Houston hat.

Biggio was amazing, and now he is below average. However, I am all for him getting to 3000 in a Houston uniform.

Then, he needs to become a part time player.

Not true. In 1998 Biggio grounded into 10 double plays.

A middle infielder with an average OPS of close to .800 the last three seasons isn't anywhere close to being below average.

The article says 97 was the year he didn't ground into a double play, not 98.

    2004 above average .806
    2005 above average .792
    2006 average-below average .767

Unfortunately he is at below average right now. This is like Bagwell during the 04 season. Alot of folks refused to acknowledge that he was below average as a 1st baseman by that point. It's the same with Biggio. I love the guy but he is struggling to maintain mediocrity.

I am not advocating benching Biggio until he gets his 3000 hits though.

Among MLB 2Bs, his OBPS is 9th. Thats not below average. Thats ABOVE average.

Looking at all offensive categories among 2Bs, you COULD make the case that he is above average as a whole. He is average AT WORST. IMO, he is somewhere between average and above average as a whole.

    lol

Kent, Burke & Valentin aren't even officially ranked because they don't have enough ABs.

Try qualified players (7th in NL and 9th in MLB) ..thats ABOVE average

That's the point though. Kent, Burke and Valentin are all better 2nd baseman than Biggio RIGHT NOW. That's the point that I'm trying to hammer into your heads.

Not based on league qualifications they aren't. They have 140-170 less ABs. Thats 40 games worth of ABs. If you think it isn't easier to achieve better AVGs overer a shorter period of time, then there is no sense in having a discussion because you flat out "don't get it".

BTW, Scott Hairston with Arizona is hitting .500 so far this year. I think hes a legit threat to Ted Williams .400 feat.

That's correct. I was correcting texanskan who said Biggio did not ground into a double play in 1998 either.
