Just got a new laptop and was wondering what software I should get installed on it. I go to download.com (C|Net) quite often to check out the latest and greatest in freeware/shareware. i.e. just installed BitTorrent, AVG Anti-Viral, and Google Earth last night

In your opinion, what are some "must-have" apps (or games) no PC should go without nowadays?

    Thanks!

    This made me laugh.

Why do people like cookies? I mean, I've never had one, but why would anyone like them?

Try it. Firefox rules - and it's not full of security holes.

yea...absolutely. Bittorrent is not near as feature-rich as the two you mentioned.
Some dont like Azureus cause it uses java and reportedly can slow down some machines...but if you have good specs on your machine, it shouldnt give you trouble.

must haves....at least two or three different spyware/adware detectors.

    Adaware, Spybot, etc...

Gotta disagree, I don't like either of those really. I've tried both. But try it, you might like em.

Surprised no one mentioned anti-virus software.

    i would say
    anti-virus
    spyware
    adware
    office
nero/roxio (any decent cd/dvd burning program)
xvid codec + bsplayer (my personal favorite)
    alcohol/daemon tools for drive emulation
aim/yahoo/msn messenger depends on what u use
    data recovery software
    power dvd
    firefox is good too
    java

i would say those apps are the most helpful or essential

    ZoneAlarm for free firewall protection.

If anyone mentions a Norton product of any kind, I'll kill 'em.

Has anyone tried the Microsoft's OneCare for virus/antispyware? I have been on the beta team for the last 6 months or so and really like it. It isn't very intrusive and doesn't hog the system like Norton.

The price is right too. $50 for a 3 computer license.

No, just AIM, MSN, Yahoo, or whatever he uses. I use both AIM and MSN, I just d-loaded both apps. I dont know of any other programs like Trillian/GAIM to recommend. I just didnt like either of those, so I just use both AIM and MSN
