JJ Redick has pulled out of an Orlando tryout possibly indicating that he has a guarantee to be selected in the top 10. The Rockets are also mentioned in the article as having interest in possibly selecting Redick But more importantly is who does this puch down in the draft and how much more valuable is the number 8 pick now...especially considering Sheldon may go top 5. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/40900/20060613/redick_cancels_private_workout_with_magic/
i'm still having difficulty believing someone is going to reach for sheldon in the top 5. i hope someone is that, um, unbright.
Wow, we have been arguing about Redick, how ironic would it be if he goes before our pick? Danny Ainge was a Redick type of player, he may see some similarities. DD
well lets' look at it like this: the top players, in no order, are - bargnani, thomas, aldridge, morrison, roy, gay. we are two picks away from grabbing one of the top 6. if two of shelden williams, jj redick, patrick o'bryant, and marcus williams cracks the top 6 we are looking at a first class pick. maybe something like this: tor-bargnani chi-aldridge cha-morrison por-roy atl-shelden top 5? min-gay bos-redick, marcus? hou-thomas?!
But what if it looks like this: Tor - Bargnani Chi - Roy Cha - Aldridge Por - Morrison Atl - Marcus Williams Min - O'Bryant Bos - Redick Hou - ????? (TT / Gay / Simmons / Brewer / Carney)
IMO, that makes the number 8 pick a very valuable pick and if a deal from Orlando is still on the table I take it...if not I look to NO and if no deal can be made I draft the best available player. I clearly do not know who the Rockets value more out of that group but I like what I have heard from Brewer...not so much from Carney. I know even less about Gay. Tyrus Thomas is very interesting but Brewer still sounds like the safest pick. He is someone that will likely be able to play 4 positions in the NBA. So out of that Bunch I would take Brewer right now.
Crash, my unilateral Tip Jar bet of $25 (I haven't paid the Tip Jar this year anyway) is that we take Cedric Simmons -- barring a trade and the non-availability of Gay, Roy and Aldridge.
If the Rockets are really high on Simmons then it makes even more sense to me to draft down. I have never seen Simons play but from what I have read he seems like a decent player with some upside. Could the Rockets trade down with NO and take both Brewer and Simons? BTW, your on with the bet. 25 bucks it is We will just make it a little different though...baring a trade or non-availability the Rockets will take Simons or you pay. Baring a trade or non-availability of Brewer I will pay...I haven't hit the tip jar this year either nothing wrong with a little friendly bet.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2006/news/story?id=2482061 Redick nailed with a DUI. Brilliant timing.
No, he didn't get a top 10 guarantee. http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=triangle&id=4265345 http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2006/news/story?id=2482061 He's a drunkee!
http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=triangle&id=4265345 BTW the Magic are a crap organization, Redick's agent knows this.
Much like the Shelden Williams rumor (even though more believable), there is no reason for a team to give a guarantee to a player, especially for a player that is all but guaranteed to be available when you pick (#5, #7). Most of these rumors are stemming from the fact that players cancelled some of their workouts, but there a bunch of reasons for this, including being in jail for a DWI. But I hope this is all true. Like smoothie posted, any player moving into the Top 7 (Shelden, O'Bryant, Redick, etc...) pushes one of the Top 6-7 players down to us.
That's hilarious. You can pretty much guess what happened. Redick got a guarantee from a top 10 team (God I hope it wasn't us. There's no reason to give him a guarantee). He went out to celebrate and got busted. There goes his guarantee. Maybe you're on to something here.
Naaawww. No pistols and ammunition were found, and he wasn't racing to where his pitbulls were fighting.
It's funny that you say Ainge cause I was thinking the same thing last week. I thought that Ainge and Redick were similar except that Ainge is one of the most versatile athletes(white) of recent memory. Now I am not talking about the term "athleticism" that is known now-a-days. He was an athlete in every sense of the word. He could pick up any ball and excel at the sport if he put his time in. He played for the Blue Jays and he also was a high school football star as well as a great ball player at BYU. I just see Redick as a baller that has had to work hard on his coordination and athleticism and wasn't given as many god given gifts as Ainge. Ainge also wasn't a great shooter when he started. I think he is similar to Mike Gansey though.
I think its pretty clear that some GM's have told Redick's agent that they plan on drafting him if he is available and it sounds like Ainge and Boston is one of them at number 7. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2006/news/story?id=2482061 I really don't know how a dwi will affect him. I think a lot of it will depend on his past. If it is the only smear on an other wise good past then I certainly think that GM's are more likely to forgive him on draft day. Eddie Griffen was still drafted at number seven and he had tons of red flags. Of course who knows how close to number 1 he would have gone if he had a clean past with no red flags.
