Sven Goran Eriksson has told Sky Sports that he will take Wayne Rooney to the World Cup, if there is any chance of the Manchester United star playing a part in the finals.

Rooney's World Cup dreams are hanging by a thread after it was confirmed he fractured a metatarsal during Saturday's defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

The youngster has been informed that he faces six weeks out of action, an assessment which would in all probability rule Rooney out of England's first two group games.

Eriksson has another fortnight before he has to name his 23-man squad for Germany and the Swede is sure to give Rooney every opportunity to prove his fitness.

There is no chance of the forward being fit by May 15, but Eriksson has told Sky Sports that Rooney will be on the plane to Germany provided medical opinion is in favour of him being fit to play a part at some stage this summer.

With Michael Owen reporting discomfort on his return from a lengthy injury lay-off, England's striking options look a little thin and Eriksson will hope Rooney's powers of recovery match his hunger for success.

This is a huge blow to England's World Cup hopes. Although he's only 20, Rooney is already one of the best forards in the world, with unbelievable ability to not only score goals, but set them up for others. He was England's Talisman at Euro 2004 (at 18) before he suffered the same injury and missed 3 months. I can't see him making it back for the group stages, but he could be back for the knockout round.

england's gonna suck with him out. it's hard to replace a guy like that on any squad. However, i can't stand the british team so i don't care, though i wanted to see how good they really are. my teams are Ivery Coast/Holland/Ghana...love how the african teams play.

This is one of the dumbest generalizations ever!! Aggresive yes but how does that equate to dirty. Think of 1966 when almost every team that Brasil played literally went after Pele's knees. How about the Argentinians in 1990? Japan's Toda was really reckless and dangerous against Belgium in 2002. If you look for every "dirty" play by African countries in international play I bet you I can find DOZENS for every one from just the European teams.

Yes, it's also the same injury Rooney picked up at Euro 2004 that cost him 3 months.

It's not because African teams all play dirty, but because Ivory Coast and Ghana have some f'n dirty players (Drogba and Essien, respectively).

And they both play for Chelsea, what a shock :D

No, but when in a title, even miss is capitalized.
