I have been doing this for the past 3 years on YMM.

And I will be happy to share with posters/readers here on Clutchfan site as well.

I will regularly post articles (most of them translated ones or from Houston Chronicles or other available sources) updates of Yao Ming's summer activities, which unfortunately for this summer again his recuperation/recovery from a surgery.

It's almost a week after Yao Ming's surgery. How is he doing ? How is his wound ? With these questions in mind, Sohu Sports interviewed Erik Zhang Mingji, leader of Team Yao.

According to Zhang Mingji, Yao Ming is doing great in his recovery. There is little pain on the part (the left foot) that had gone under the knife, and he is also in a good mood. The stitches on his injured foot would be removed probably tomorrow.

Zhang also suggested that there'll be 3 stages for Yao's recovery plan. For Stage 1, Yao Ming will just need complete rest. For Stage 2, he will receive some physical therapy to speed up the cicatrization. Then it will be strength and conditioning exercises to return to competitive shape and form for Stage 3. Currently, the plan is that Stage 3 will be conducted in China.

Zhang also mentioned Team Yao will send request to China Basketball Association to hire an experienced orthopaedics to communicate with Yao Ming's doctor in Houston so as to speed up his recovery. Also Team Yao had tentatively decided that Yao Ming will return to China by mid June, and had chosen the National Training Bureau (in Beijing) to be the venue where he will reside during his recuperation.

Now Yao Ming can walk with crutches. Because it is inconvenient for him to walk, plus he can't take long-haul flight, so Team Yao politely declined White House's invitation for Yao Ming to attend the presidential banquet to welcome President Hu Jintao.

There had been previous reports that Houston Rockets had turned down CBA's request to send doctors over to USA to inspect Yao Ming's injury, and that the Rockets intended to stall his return (to China). When asked about this by the Sohu reporter, Zhang Mingji said those reports were totally mock-up nonsense. He said the doctor responsible for Yao Ming's surgery called him up immediately after the surgery to update him regarding Yao Ming's recuperation. This doctor earnestly told him that the Rockets will try to heal Yao Ming in the shortest time possible. He could not gurantee or predict the exact timing for Yao Ming's recovery, but said they will try their best. Team Yao had also contact management of the Houston Rockets. And Houston Rockets management had made it clear that they would not intervene in Yao Ming's return to China.

Also it was the reporter's understanding that according to Hu Jiashi, Deputy Director of Chinese Basketball Management Centre, CBA had never asked to send over doctors to USA for Yao Ming's surgery. And right after Yao Ming's surgery, CBA had also communicated with Team Yao numerous time, reiterating that they will not force Yao Ming into any games/tournaments. They also want to relay thru Team Yao to Yao Ming the message that they hope Yao Ming will not feel any pressure during his recuperation, and that he will only return to court when he is 100% recovered. In short, CBA will observe and respect scientific rules and principles, and has not issue any so-called "Return Timetable" to Yao Ming.

Team Yao also relayed Yao Ming's appreciation to the Chinese Basketball Management Centre for the care and concern they showed before and after his surgery, and he also wants to thank for all the good wishes from all his fans.

In a wink of the eyes, a week has passed since Yao Ming has the surgery on his left foot. Because the surgery has adopted some of the world's most advanced technology, and coupled with some auxiliary Chinese medical treatment in the past 5 days at his home, Yao Ming is recovering fast on his wound. The 4 stitches on his left foot were removed yesterday.

Erik Zhang Mingji, Leader of Team Yao, during an interview with the reporters yesterday, said: "It was due to proper treatment, and the optimism of Yao Ming right after the surgery that his recovery had surpassed our expectation. Even though the parts that were operated on are still swollen, they are expected, and it is within our expectation that those should vanish in a few days time." To speed up the recovery, Yao Ming now frequently massaged the swollen parts, and the doctor in charge also comes to his home on a daily basis for physical therapy using ice packs to treat his sore foot.

Erik Zhang Mingji also indicated that Stage 2 of Yao Ming's recuperation will start soon, now that his stitches were removed. In a few days time, Yao Ming will start to recieve more comprehensive physical therapy to speed up the cicatrization, relax the muscles, and expedite blood circulation of his left foot. Erik Zhang Mingji also happily reported that Yao Ming could now walk with the help of a pair of tailor-made crutches.

Complete recovery ? 2 months ? 3 months ? 4 months ? World Championship ? To continue to strive for or to give up ? As far as Yao Ming is concerned, that is the question. Or perhaps, it was not an issue after all.

It was during a game with the Dallas Mavericks at home court (at Toyota Centre in Houston) in Mid March; because of the presence of Dirk Nowitzki, some reporters chatted about international players as well as the World Championship in Japan in August. "I think our domestic players should work diligently to raise their game with one goal in mind, i.e. making the national team, and cannot relax a bit. This year I was inspired in a big way by hearing someone said: In front of you is this big opportunity (to shine and excel), which could be the best opportunity in your life, but perhaps also the last opportunity for you." At that time, Yao Ming had no concrete news or idea about Wang Zhizhi's return to China.

Now he has this important helper added to the national team who will greatly enhance its overall strength. "To tell you the truth, Da Zhi and I have not a chance to play against each other on court for the past 2 years. We've only competed one-on-one for twice in NBA, and that was when I was still a rookie. Then whenever our teams met, either I went up and he was on the bench, or vice versa, and we were never on the court simultaneously. Therefore I am not too certain about Da Zhi's current strengths and conditions." Even so, Yao Ming believed that Wang Zhizhi's reinstatement to the national team will bring more good than harm in at least 2 areas: "First, it has to be experience, expecially to our big men in the interior. For players like Ah Lian (i.e. Yi Jianlain), it will take him alot of international tournaments to learn and improve his game and gain experience. But Da Zhi can easily transfer such experiences directly to our young players in the national team. Moreover, it has to be his height; he will bring in his height and help enhance the defense territorial zones of the national team." So when the overall strength of the Chinese national team maybe peaking (with the return of Wang Zhizhi), maybe this will present Yao Ming the best opportunity in his professional career (for medalling or higher position in the World Championship), but now he might have to brush this opportunity aside due to the injury/surgery to his big left foot.

It was widely speculated and no one was certain within the basketball circle whether it would really take Yao Ming 2 months to 6 months to be able to return to court to compete. There were 2 doctors operating on Yao Ming's left foot. Right after his surgery, Tom Clanton, Houston Rockets team physician indicated that Yao Ming will need 3 to 4 months be able to return to court; the other doctor from Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Centre however indicated "He should be able to walk, recover and resume training in 2 months' time." So what about Yao Ming's response ? "Of course, I like the latter optimistic view better; I wish I can recover the sooner the better."

Yao Ming's surgery was on April 14. And right after the surgery, Yao Ming seemed to be responding well and quick on his recovery. He is now recuperating at home in Windsor Lake & Park. He had to adhere strictly in accordance to a recuperation time table drawn up by the doctors, and this forthcoming 2 weeks are extremely crucial to Yao Ming's speedy recovery. In these 2 weeks right after the surgery, Yao Ming is not allowed to move or walk, and has to be confined to complete bed rest. And if absolutely required to move, he can walk with the help of his pair of crutches.

And right after the initial 2 weeks, if Yao Ming responds well (to the treatment/therapy), then he may discard the walking crutches and walk with a pair of special tailor-made protective boot. And this will be an important step in the entire recuperation procedure, and it could as well decide how long it will take Yao Ming to completely recover. Judged from his current favorable progress, Yao Ming will probably not need to walk with the pair of crutches any more towards the end of this month.

But as far as a professional basketball player is concerned, even if he has no injury or illness, how to maintain his body conditions is another big issue. Yao Ming himself once said, for a NBA player, if he does not keep practicing for 2 days, his conditions and form will drop 50%; if there is no practice and strength and conditioning exercise for 1 week, then there will be nothing left (of one's competitive form and shape). "In order to regain competivie shape and form, it would be like mountian climbing; you probably have to go all out, do alot of excessive physical exercises for several weeks to gain back just 20% of your old shape and form." If Yao Ming really wants to return to the national team and prepare for the World Championship, then he will be facing an extremely taunting task in his recuperation/recovery training. Like what happened last year (in May/June) when Yao Ming had the surgery (on his ankle) in San Francisco, he had not relaxed a bit. NBA has this stipulation; during the regular season and until the final in the playoff, every court/stadium of every NBA team will be available unconditionally for NBA players. Therefore at that time in May/June, Yao Ming went to the Oakland Arena, home court of the Golden States Warriors on a daily basis for his strength and conditioning training, in order to regain his competitive shape and form. Similarly, when he had his toe surgery in December, he resumed his recovery training in January, the day he could walk normally again.

So let Yao Ming rest quietly to recuperate from his wound now; it is so rare in a year that he can have such luxury for complete rest. This is an opportunity. As for the World Championship ? When has Yao Ming failed us ??

Naaaaah, even though he could be spending most of his time recuperating from his troubled left foot this whole summer, there will be interesting activities coming up, like he could be spending a vacation in Hawaii, and he could again be the main attraction for the 2nd Asian NBA Basketball Without Borders camp in Shanghai in June.

So do you want me covering those activities for you guys over here ??

Talking about Hawaii, the mayor of Honolulu, a big Yao Ming fan, has just wrapped up a visit in China, trying to hook up a vacation for Yao Ming there this summer.

Being a huge fan of the NBA's Yao Ming, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has coined himself "Yao Mufi" and is looking forward to inviting the basketball player to Hawaii for a vacation.

Hannemann, who stands about 1.9 metres and used to be a basketball coach himself, has just completed a week-long goodwill trip to China,

The purpose of his visit was partly to make arrangements for Yao's possible tour of the island.

"We are also thinking about bringing a panda back to Honolulu," the mayor said on Saturday at a Beijing hotel, after a meeting with officials from the forestry authority on the likelihood of this happening. He flew back home on Saturday.

Recognizing that pandas are one of the most rare animals in the world, Hannemann said they had come to symbolize endangered species and conservation.

The University of Hawaii is renowned for its genetic research and Hannemann said they would try their best to help prolong the life of the panda.

He said if all goes well, the panda would be the first of its species to live by the seaside, as the zoo in Honolulu is only one street away from the coast.

As China has strict requirements for sending pandas abroad, the mayor said the whole plan is still more like an idea and his meeting with the relevant officials was the first contact he has had with the Chinese on the issue.

This was Hannemann's first trip to China after taking office in January 2005, which he described as a good time to visit.

He first visited the southern Chinese city Zhongshan, the ancestral home of most Chinese living in Hawaii.

He said as next year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the sister city relationship, a series of activities will be held in the two cities to commemorate the special bond. The mayor also visited Shanghai, where he closely studied the development of a light-rail mass transit system and held discussions on taking part in the 2010 World Expo.

Thanks pryuen. You guys are one of the reasons why the clutchfans.net is head and shoulder above the other basketball sites. I have visited many of them before and I have never seen a site which had dedicated members like you guys who use so much time to translate the materials in order to bring the latest news of Yao to us. The future of this franchise depends on the recovery of Yao's foot and Tmac's back. So any news about them is welcome. Thank you again.

Interview of Yao Ming on a Beijing newspaper, Eastern Morning Paper as of April 27.

Reporter: What kind of player should the Rockets add (next season)?

Yao Ming: I think we need players that don't get injured easily. We have many things that required to be enhanced. But if we had not had these many injuries and sicknesses, we are actually a pretty strong team this season.

Reporter: The probability of the Rockets getting the #1 draft pick is 2.3%. If the Rockets gets the #1 pick, who will you choose ? If it is draft pick #8, then what will be your choice ?

Yao Ming: To be frank, I knew nothing about the picks. But I would tend to think whoever is useful to our team, then he will be a good player.

Reporter: You are on the Top 3 of players that General Managers (of every NBA team) want to trade for. What do you think ?

Yao Ming: I am very surprise and I felt flattered. I think I have to thank the many General Managers that endorsed and recognized the personal efforts I have put into improving my games for all these years. I felt the value of particular players should be manifested in a particular team's game plans/strategies; I place more emphasis on whether a player can win a championship or bring extra to a team. From this perspective, the above ranking really does not have much significance to me. Moreover, I just hope the Houston Rockets won't trade me away.

Reporter: Will you continue to play the role of the core player in the Rockets?

Yao Ming: I always cannot agree to this debate of whether I or Tracy should be the core player of this team. Player's function is more important that just player's star status. Each player has his own role on a team; for example, a role player has his support role in the team. I thought if the team cannot win, then this whole debate of so-called core player becomes meaningless. We have to remember that basketball is a team sports, and every player has his own role function and responsibility.

Reporter: When do you think you will peak in your career?

Yao Ming: I don't know when I will peak. As long as my body conditions won't go down hill, then I look forward to improve and raise my game on a year-to-year basis. As far as I'm concerned, I surely do not wish I will peak too soon, as it will mean that I will go down hill once I have reached my peak.

Reporter: Has there been any psychological changes in your second injury compared to your first injury within this season ?

Yao Ming: I should say not much difference. But this injury had let me realize I should pay more attention to protect my own body; moreover recovery from an injury takes time and is a strenuous process that you need to put in tremandous effort; moreover, I was not as nervous in this surgery when compared to the previous one. I have learnt that I will have to treasure my own body in the future and I surely hope I will have a much healthier body from now on.

Reporter: If you can't take part in the World Championship, who do you think is your best repacement ?

Yao Ming: If I have to pick, it has to be Wang Zhizhi.

Reporter: What do you think is Da Zhi's best position? Centre? Power Forward ?

Yao Ming: Da Zhi can play power forward or centre. I think he is competent in both positions.

Reporter: If you are really to miss playing in the World Championship, have you considered to use any other means to help the national team, for instance as its consultant, or as its cheerleader ?

Yao Ming: Any means is possible, and I think it has to be decided by the coach, and this is his job. Personally I will be extremely eager to go to Japan. Even if I cannot play, I will be there to rave and support the national team by the courtside. Of course the prerequisite is that I would not take up a player's slot.

Reporter: What is your personal expectation of the national team for this World Championship? In what particular areas you think the national team require improvement ?

Yao Ming: Personally I think it is more difficult to reach the Final 8 than before, but my personal goal is the Final 8. I think the changes/improvements need to come in 3 aspects: 1. No more injuries and sicknesses; 2. The players need to train more assiduously; 3. The national team must play more (in international tournaments) with strong teams from USA and Europe.

Reporter: Do you anticipate teaming up with Da Zhi in the 2008 Beijing Olympic ? What is your target (position)?

Yao Ming: I very much look forward to teaming up with Da Zhi. Every of the players (in China) are improving, and I am so full of confidence about the Chinese team. However you can't just dream about (but you need to fight for) higher positions. As long as we as players improve our game/techniques, our physical strength,and gel as a team (to play to our best capabilities), the results will come naturally.

Reporter: Other than training your body, what do you do while you are recuperating?

Yao Ming: Surfing the Internet; reading and listening to music. Mainly just relax and rest.

Reporter: Rafer Aslton said all the Rockets players have no reasons for their summer vacation. So did they tell you they will train hard throughout this summer ?

Yao Ming: I have never relaxed and not to train assiduously. You don't worry about how a professional basketball player spend his summer vacation. Everybody will think about how to sharpen their strength and skills in the summer. As for myself, as long as my body permits me, I will continue to strive hard and increase the intensity of my training in order to become better.

Reporter: Sometimes earlier, there were reports in some of the domestic media about you and Ye Li plan to get married this summer.

Yao Ming: I never discuss my personal affairs in the public.

Yao Ming finally gets rid of his pair of crutches !!

Up till now, Yao Ming is progressing well in strict accordance with his recuperation time table; this also means that in 3 months' time, we should be able to see a healthy Yao Ming. At that time, it will also be the critcal time for the China national team's preparation for the World Championship.

"Tomorrow (Local Houston time April 26), I will go to Toyota Centre." This will be Yao Ming's first trip back to the gym of Toyota Centre since he injured (his left foot) at the Delta Centre in Salt Lake City on April 10. "Actually, I am doing fine in my recovery; there does not seem to be too major a problem. I will just go there to try to walk a few small steps, and then I'll see if I can do some slight exercise." Yao Ming will put on a pair of tailor-made protective boots and begin some small tests to check his progress (of recovery) so far.

Yao Ming understands deep down inside he should not give himself too much pressure as he is still recovering. Like the toe injury in December, he has to wait for almost over half a month before he could start his strength and conditioning exercise of the upper limbs; this time the injury is on the foot ligament and bone, and is more severe than last time. Barring any other accidents, then probably Yao Ming can resume normal strength and conditioning training by mid May. But then he will have to train on his own at the Toyota Centre, as everybody else has gone on vacation. He will only have his personal trainer, Anthony Falsone accompanying him on those training.

Erik Zhang Mingji, Yao Ming's agent, has left Shanghai for the US on April 26. "At this moment, I think everybody understands Yao Ming's situation. Therefore I urge you all not to disturb him and leave him alone to recover from his wound as soon as possible." At the airport, Zhang Mingji reiterated over and over again to the press and media on the "protection" of Yao Ming. Also in order to avoid Yao Ming recieving too many disturbances, Eirk Zhang Mingji had already turned down several interview requests from the media/press. "Yao Ming now cannot undergo such stress and disturbances. The key is to let him rest and recover from his injury."

It is still indefinite as to when Yao Ming will return to China. Actually when it became inevitable that the Rockets will miss the playoff in March, Yao Ming had privately disclosed that he wanted to return to Shanghai by end April. Yao Ming is actually a person very much attached to his homeland and family, but since his arrival into NBA, he seldom has chances to stay in Shanghai.

Back in the summer of 2003, in its preparation for the Asian Championship, Yao Ming and the national team had toured major cities of China starting June, and once the Asian Championship was over on October 1, Yao Ming had to hurry back to Houston for the preseason training camp; he stayed in Shanghai for less than a month; In the summer of 2004, it was the Olympic and the China Game, and the Rockets were competing in the playoff. Even though Yao Ming was given a special leave of 3 weeks by the Chinese Basketball Association, but still it was only a 3 to 4 weeks' stay in Shanghai. Then in the summer of 2005, due to his ankle surgery, Yao Ming had to join the national team directly in Beijing, and had to hurry back to Houston right after the Asian Championship in Doha. He had less than half a month's time in Shanghai. His home there was just like a hotel to him. The current season ended prematurely (as the Rockets failed to make the playoff); originally Yao Ming wanted to spend more time at home in Shanghai, but then his plan got shelfed due to his foot injury.

"Originally I have asked my relatives in Shanghai to apply (and install) broadband at my home in Shanghai." Yao Ming has deep Warcraft complex, but now he cannot but to continue to endure the lousy slow speed there in Houston. Now the very first event that could trigger Yao Ming's return to China will be the NBA Basketball Without Borders activities starting June 8 in Shanghai. Last year, (when this camp was held) in Beijing, Yao Ming was an instructor for the young players. This year, he will be promoted to be one of the coaches. "I crave to be able to go back to have a look, but then it very much depends on how I recover from my wound." Yao Ming is very enthusiastic about the Basketball Without Borders program, but he has to obey to his own body condition. Moreover, if Yao Ming do returns to China, it will be disadvantageous to his speedy recovery, as he will be mobbed everywhere by his crazy fans in China.

His home in Windsor Lake & Park could be somewhat lonely, but perhaps it is the only place on earth where Yao Ming could find the tranquility he required for his recuperation.

Considering there is another thread with a photo of Yao in starbucks two days ago, I guess it's true. I thought it wasn't, but these two news sort of verify each other.

Just curious to know when Yao is on the list of top 3 players that the GMs in the league would trade for. And what are the other 2 players, Lebron and Kobe?
