UNC Grad in Court on Alleged Hit and Run

    Monday, March 06, 2006

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A University of North Carolina graduate from Iran, accused of running down nine people on campus to avenge the treatment of Muslims, said at a hearing Monday that he was "thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah."

Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar was accused of driving a sport utility vehicle through The Pit, a popular campus gathering spot, injuring nine people Friday. None of the victims was seriously hurt.

Police Chief Derek Poarch said Taheri-azar told investigators he intentionally hit people to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world."

Taheri-azar, 22, appeared in Orange County District Court in nearby Hillsborough on nine counts of attempted murder and nine counts of assault.

His bail was set at $5.5 million, and he was assigned a public defender, but he said after the hearing: "The truth is my lawyer."

Taheri-azar graduated from North Carolina in December after studying psychology and philosophy. Investigators believe he has spent most of his life in the United States.

On campus, UNC students held what they called an "anti-terrorism" rally.

"We don't want terrorism here, and we're not gonna stand for that where we live and where we go to school," said Kris Wampler, a student at UNC and member of the College Republicans, which helped organize the rally.

About 50 students attended the rally, including several Muslim students who debated with organizers and said Taheri-azar had not been linked to any terrorist group.

"When you think in terms of a global context, this was an isolated incident," said Khurram Bilal Tariq, a 22-year-old junior.

Stephen Mann, an 18-year-old freshman, said he wasn't singling out Islam with his call to label Friday's incident terrorism. He said a member of any religion who did what Taheri-azar is accused of doing should be called a terrorist.

"If you try to hurt someone in the name of a cause, that's terrorism," he said.

Iranians are not terrorists. infact they are the most open minded and secular population in the entier Middel east. unfortunately, they are being abused under a Regime that stands for everything the iranian people dont like to be associated with. this clown is obviousely an isolated case. dont paint everyone with the same brush. when the US shut-down an Iranian passanger jet, only a minority of the people of iran protested. they knew that the amnerican people were not all warmonguers like regan and the b*stard general who orderd the shooting down of the plane.

Are you OK with George Bush spreading his will around the world? At least this young wacko will go on trial for attempted murder. I am still waiting for George Bush and his administration to go on trial for crimes against humanity. I think Bush should be sharing a cell with Saddam.

I hope not. I think he was out on hiatus on his own term. We need a plethora of personalities in D&D and gwayneco is definitely a character. Not that long ago he started a thread by asking viewers to identfy three quotes (from Osama, me, and a well known terrorist supporter in a Northeast state). I thought that was funny as hell -- having been used to stuff like that in the past.

Sammy Fisher didn't mince his words when he assaulted gwayneco, who was rightfully feeling outraged. But gwayneco's response in one particular post in that thread was, shall I say, over the edge.

I think gwayne is taking a sabbatical on his own. I do not believe he was banned.

We just have to remember to keep D&D civil, like Deckard says.

We all have our different opinions, and we all love to express them here. We just need to be civil about it, speaking as someone who has definitely been uncivil in here in the past.

I've tried to tone it down, but unfortunately the over-the-top insults still come out from me every so often, and for that, I apologize.

Note to the youngsters....being civil gets easier the older you get! Must be the prescription medication! :D

I'm implying that some tend to jump with glee any time it is reported that some idiot is doing something crazy is the name of Islam/Allah/etc. One person's craziness does not justify a crusade against Islam or policies for dominating the world by force. I don't condone anyone trying to kill anybody, so this guy should stand trial for attempted murder.

It's pretty offensive if you ask me, just as bad as celebrating 9/11.
