Araujo is a tool.
Robinson is a freak of nature.

Fans broke out in laughter in the first quarter when five-foot-nine Knicks guard Nate Robinson won a jump ball over Toronto's much-maligned centre Rafael Araujo who stands six-foot-11

I wonder if the ref threw the ball high enough. That's crazy.

The jump ball has to be the most idiotic "play" in sports. They should just change it to a 3 pointer, alternating teams on who shoots.

Yao has lost jump balls to guys a foot shorter than him as well. It's dumb, the shorter guys jump and tip the ball before it makes it to the larger guys shoulders.

Doesnt the ball have to start coming down before someone tries to tip it?

That's the dumbest idea in the history of American sport.

EVERYBODY knows it should rock/paper/scissors.

It's supposed to have reached it's peak, I believe.....fat chance on Yao winning those tips, because I actually think he tries to do just that-wait for the ball to reach it's peak.

he beat someone from the mavs to a jump ball a couple of days back too. the guy doesn't have just a great vert, he gets up extremely quick. he is one of the most explosive leapers in the league.

Yao losing to a 6'6" guy is not as bad as losing to a sub 6 feet guy when you're almost a 7 footer. thats serisouly just embarassing

The NBA needs to start enforcing the rule. Jump balls are a sham. In addition to the early jumping, many times the ref doesn't throw the ball up high enough to allow the taller player to have an advantage.

This is one of my longtime NBA pet peeves.

The ball having to reach its peak might not be the problem. Maybe the peak of the ball thrown just needs to be higher. These NBA players can jump. Yao's losing out because by the time the ball's starting to come down, the other player is already up there waiting for it. Yao's not losing out on his jump and the idea that the others can jump over his extended hands, it just might very well be that Yao's timing on jump balls aren't exactly ideal.

I'm down. Another radical idea would be to have some kind of arrow that points one way, then points the other way after every tie ball.

I think introducing rock-paper-scissors would be the single greatest PR move of David Stern's storied career as NBA commish.

Educate me please: why is the ref supposed to allow the taller player to have an advantage?

The jumpball rule IS stupid, but for the totally opposite reason: it usually gives the taller player advantage.
