Longer needles needed for fatter buttocks - study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Fatter rear ends are causing many drug injections to miss their mark, requiring longer needles to reach buttock muscle, researchers said on Monday.

Standard-sized needles failed to reach the buttock muscle in 23 out of 25 women whose rears were examined after what was supposed to be an intramuscular injection of a drug.

Two-thirds of the 50 patients in the study did not receive the full dosage of the drug, which instead lodged in the fat tissue of their buttocks, researchers from The Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin said in a presentation to the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Besides patients receiving less than the correct drug dosage, medications that remain lodged in fat can cause infection or irritation, researchers Victoria Chan said.

"There is no question that obesity is the underlying cause. We have identified a new problem related, in part, to the increasing amount of fat in patients' buttocks," Chan said.

"The amount of fat tissue overlying the muscles exceeds the length of the needles commonly used for these injections," she said.

The 25 men and 25 women studied at the Irish hospital ranged in age from 21 to 87.

The buttocks are a good place for intramuscular injections because there are relatively few major blood vessels, nerves and bones that can be damaged by a needle. Plentiful smaller blood vessels found in muscle carry the drug to the rest of the body, while fat tissue contains relatively few blood vessels.

Obesity affects more than 300 million people worldwide and is based on a measure of height versus weight that produces a body mass index above 30. An estimated 65 percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.

The report, Mean Body Weight, Height, and Body Mass Index (BMI) 1960-2002: United States, prepared by CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, shows that the average height of a man aged 20-74 years increased from just over 5’8” in 1960 to 5’9½ ’’ in 2002, while the average height of a woman the same age increased from slightly over 5’3” 1960 to 5’4” in 2002.

Meanwhile, the average weight for men aged 20-74 years rose dramatically from 166.3 pounds in 1960 to 191 pounds in 2002, while the average weight for women the same age increased from 140.2 pounds in 1960 to 164.3 pounds in 2002.

Dang! 191! for an average height of 5'10'' is crazy. Even crazier is that women are up to 165 lbs @ 5'4''!

It seems only natural to me. Science is giving adults more options at cheaper prices. It is easy to get good food now. And people are eating it. Not only that, but I think the fact that people excersize more is a big problem too, cause I think what happens is that people who excersized once will eventually have to stop. And those people are used to feeding on calories. when they stop excersizing they get fat on calories. Charles Bark is prob the best example of that. Many good reasons to get fatter and weigh more. I don't blame people at all.

One thing to keep in mind is that the elderly population is becoming an increasingly larger percentage of the overall population. So that skews the stats a little bit as old men tend to carry a belly. Still, Americans are lardasses...

You could claim that, but in the same line of reasoning, you can say that obese elderly men die earlier. If anything, people over 70 are usually underweight and tend to bring down the average. I guess the transition period of 50-70 years contain the obese elderly who had the good fortune to live in a world of triple heart bypasses and lipitor.

I didn't mean the elderly obese, I'm pretty damn sure that the older you get, the more you weigh. Just look at how many older men have pot bellies. You store more fat as you get older in general. As the baby boomers move into old age, it means more older people. Older people tend to be fatter than younger people, ergo the weight skews. You don't have to consider gross obesity to account for the increase in weight.

I'm agreeing that older people gain more weight, but only up to a certain age. After 55 or 65 years of age, the weight drops back down and then some. Plus, I doubt even if you exclude older people, the American average would jump down to a drastically lower level. Instead, the weight will still be drastically over the ideal weight. We are still very, very overweight. I think we are in agreement.

I see a lot of pot-bellied senior citizens, but I don't see too many that are over 190 lbs.
