MLB officials to decide if roof at Minute Maid stays open, closed

If the weather is nice, the roof at Minute Maid Park will be open for Game 2 of the World Series Tuesday night.

And it won't be the Astros' call.

Major League Baseball officials will decide.

``It's our decision,'' MLB spokesman Richard Levin said. ``We'll decide it on a day-to-day basis. If the conditions are nice, it'll be open.''

The Astros would prefer to have the roof closed. Players say it makes the conditions easy to play in.

``The wind can be tricky in here,'' one player said. ``I don't want to make it sound like an excuse, but it's not a true wind.'' Management prefers the roof closed because it makes for a louder environment.

Whatever the reasons, the Astros have been one of the best home teams in baseball the last two years. They're 79-30 at Minute Maid Park since August 4, 2004.

``The players would prefer it be closed,'' Jeff Bagwell said. ``That being said, we're not going to use the roof as an excuse.''

This isn't a new issue in the World Series. Randy Johnson wanted the roof closed in Phoenix in 2001. Because it was a nice weather night, MLB officials ordered it open.

Fortunately for us, the cold front came through and sounds like it might be a bit chilly!

If the sux had a choice with their stadium, MLB would kiss thier ass and say go ahead and do what you want, it is your choice.

Figures MLB officials would get to decide whether the roof stays open or not at a game in Chicago. :p

Why aren't they here all freaking summer long dictating whether the park is open? Why didn't they tell Mother Nature to kiss their asses and shut off the rain and cool wind last night? I mean, if they want to be petty freaking control freaks, then they should go the whole freaking route.

well, the article indicates they did this in 2001 with the D-Backs...so it's not just an Astros thing. but, nevertheless, I don't like it.

The point is, either be a petty control freak or don't. To suddenly come sweeping in on their dingy white horse and proclaim "Open Roof for Fairness!" just because it is now the World Series is disingenuous. If it was fair in May when the Astros were getting their heads handed to them, it's fair today. And that goes for the D-Backs in 2001 and for the Astros in 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well, dammit. :D

I work in the information technology sector. I don't see why there couldn't be some sort of "technical difficulty" that would prohibit the roof from opening. There has to be some loyal Astros fan in the IT department at the Astros that could slip a an oops into the system that opens the roof.

i don't think they're doing it for fairness..i think they're doing it because they think it looks better on the national broadcast of baseball's biggest stage.

Yes if I was the Cards and Braves I'd be a little PO'd if now all of a sudden the lid gets removed on the stadium.

Man, I was having a good time b****ing and moaning and you want to come in here with sound reasoning?? Sorry to do a 180 but seriously, that sounds reasonable. It's just a sucky trade-off: better "looks" and diminishing a much better "sound". That place was amazing for Game 5 last week.

it'll still be louder than chicago.

the aesthetics thing was something i heard this morning....they want it to look as best it can for TV..and they think it does that better by being open...they can get blimp shots of the open stadium with the skyline in the background, i guess.

That's the worst excuse for doing this I've heard yet, not that you were the one making it, Max. Bloody hell... they want good blimp shots??? What is the country coming to!
