OK, to preface this, I got a DWI a couple of years ago. First one. Really sucked. I got a suspended license for a year. Went through that just fine. My license was reinstated a little over a year ago.

Flash to yesterday morning. I'm driving to work, and get caught in a speedtrap. My reg. was expired, so I knew he got me. Next thing I know, I'm getting into handcuffs and getting crated away because my license is suspended. Why????? I've noooo freaking idea.

This was in Bellaire, at 10:00 in the morning. I get processed, and get to my little cell, which has a phone in it. I ask if it is operational. The guy says "sure", and closes me up.

Next, I sit there for 8 freaking hours telling them that "no, idjits, the phone doesn't work! I need to call someone for a bond, damnit!" To no avail.

Finally, around 7:00, I get a supervisor who will let me use a phone. BUT! Surprise, surprise! I get to go to county jail first. No ifs, ands, or buts. I immediately phone my folks to post a bond.

Now, if y'all never go to County, consider yourself lucky. I went with the DWI, and it is the worst place you ever want to be, period. Nothing but degenerates, convicts, and lots and lots of concrete. I get the priveledge of staying there until 3:30 in the morning. Finally get home at 4:00

    It gets worse.

Wake up at 10:00. Call work and make a BS excuse. Now it's off to straighten out my suspension, and to get my car out of hawk.

Reason my license was suspended???? $28.50. That's right..... $30 freakin' dollars. I didn't forward my address to the police when I moved, and they have a "surcharge" fee on all suspended licenses once they are retrieved. A crappy $104/year charge. I had NOOOOOO idea about that, at all.

Get that "part" fixed. Now it's on to getting my car back.

Get to the wrecking place. I explain that the title is not in my name, but I brought the bill of sale. Not good enough. They need an affidavit to be notarized.

Fine. I go to get that done. Bring it back to the wreckers.

"Oh, we didn't tell you?? You also need a release form from Bellaire."

What???? whatever, I drive back over to BPD and wait an hour for them to give that to me.

Back to the wreckers. "Oh damn, we didn't tell you? We need a valid form of ID. All you have is a passport."

Me: "What the f*** do you think a passport is? They just confiscated my f***ing license!"

Them" "Oh, I don't want to get fired. Come back tomorrow."

    Me "..........."

    Me "you're an idiot."

So I leave, without car, and come home. I call my lawyer. He says I could get hosed some more. Wayyy hosed. It'll cost me $750 for him to do it, and he says I still may have to go to jail again for a weekend.

    Wonderful.

Finally get home at 7:00. Can't bother to go out to watch the Astro's. I'm too livid. I stay at home to watch.

Call the wrecker co. to see if they've found out if a passport is a valid ID. There's a new guy there. He, luckily says "dude, bring me what you have, and I'll release it.

Finally get my car at 9:30. (Remember what I've said about my car and A.M. radio. Didn't even get to listen to the game through the 7th and 8th.)

Finally get home, just in time to see us close it out. (The only good to come out of this)

    So:
    Cost of late fee? $28.50
    Cost of changing addy? $30.00
    Total: $58.50

    Cost of not doing this?

    2 days in jail.
    Wrecker fee: $228.13
    Bond: $150
    Changing crap back: $28.50
    Reinstatement fee: $225
    Lawyer: $750

And I may still get to go to jail for a weekend

    Total:

    $1381.63

And that's if no fines are imposed, which, hopefully, there will be.

This is honest to God crap. I can understand a warrant... maybe... being issues for $30 bucks, but to suspend your license????

And, in conclusion: Someone had to sacrifice themselves for the Astro's to get over this hump. Just be thankful it was me, and not you. :p

Hey - did you get an email from me? I tried to send you one through the bbs. I had an extra ticket to the Rockets vs. Magic preseason game.

You missed it, man. Free seat on the floor. 5th row.

    My sympathy, fattie.

You've gotta look at the bright side of this mess. You didn't get fired from your work. You didn't hurt anyone physically, including yourself. You learned (I hope) a costly lesson on the consequences of procrastination, even for *small* things.

    Now regroup and move on.

Yes the cops are lazy and inept, so are a few municipal workers. Did I forget to say cops suck? Cops suck.

Am I missing something? How was you getting busted for driving drunk and then busted a second time for a missed fine for the benefit of the Astros? :)
