So I am interviewing for a job and I have to maintain their company catalog website. They say I need to know ASP. I have studied it a little before but never practically used it. I know html/ Dreamweaver pretty well, and I can figure out JavaScript and find JavaScript code and insert what I want done etc.

I don't think this company knows much tech stuff at all, that's why they need a web guy. Is ASP easy enough to act like I know and figure it out on the fly? It's just one website. I don't think it's too involved. I think I'm just going to say I can do it and figure it out with the existing code. I've wanted to learn it anyway but never really had a reason to. Is it integrated into Dreamweaver Interdev where I can pick it up quickly? It's the only aspect of the job description that concerns me.

Help, please. :D

Remember that ASP is not a language, you can program an ASP .NET app in visual c++, c#, vb, j# (all .NET, ofcourse).... what version of ASP (.NET 1.1, .NET 2.0, pre-.NET)?....

I would say that you're familar with ASP (LIE).

In terms of DW and whatever, I just use Visual Studio (you can d/l webdev version for free http://www.asp.net )

If you understand programming then its not bad at all, otherwise you may have trouble. ASP is like vb, it has variables, functions, etc.... but its a scripting language like javascript.

Is it old school ASP or ASP.net? If its old school asp, tell them you plan on rewriting it in ASP.net

Like said above, if you know programming in general and if they have no clue, just say that you know it and go buy a book. In simple web apps it isn't too hard to stumble your way around.

It's quite easy if you are familiar with programming. You seem to come from a WYSIWYG angle, which could make it a bit more difficult. As a programming language though, it's as easy as they come really...

Thanks everyone.

Well I guess have a basic programming understanding. I tried to really learn it in the past few years could but never had a practical use for it and never find a book that taught it to my liking. It always seemed like they didn't explain all the parts of the code in the examples etc. I wrote bitchin' Basic programs on my Commodore 64 on my own when I was 13 in 1983. :D I thought Basic was easy as hell but no other language came to me as easy but I guess I didn't really try that much.

"Must have knowledge of ASP and PHP" - no ASP.net, I don't know PHP either.. yikes. I think I can figure it out for their needs. I will just say that I'm familiar with it (lie). :D

I just don't want to leave a job for something I'n kind of sketchy on, even though I dislike my current job. But i do want to learn.

Seriously, though... MACROMEDIA has the tutorials within the program that can show you how to add recordsets, dynamic pages, etc.

ASP is easy to learn. You just have to keep at it and you won't forget it. It's like riding a bike... you never forget...
