http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=4963 (more pics at the original link) Here's a pretty interesting accessory, I guess. Although to be honest, I personally wouldn't have much use for the features mentioned above (might play some games, but would rather play them on the PSP's screen anyways). I am interested to see if it let's you watch UMD movies on your TV as well as games though. It doesn't say that specifically, but I wouldn't think it would be much harder to do (if at all). If it did allow this, then those UMD movies don't seem as bad of a purchase for those uneasy about buying two copies of the same movie (DVD and UMD). I'm still trying to get the specifics of the UMD movie format though. It sounds like the movies are encoded at a DVD-like resolution (possible to do with only 1.8GB due to MP4 format), yet it still may not look like it. However, I don't think it would look too bad on TV's, if this worked. Maybe not quite as good as DVD's, but better than buying two versions of the same movie for some people. Any other thoughts on this? Just a FYI, but in case you didn't know, the PSP launched in Europe late last week (Sept. 1st). The numbers are still coming in, but it looks like Europe loves the PSP. In the UK, the PSP sold more than any other console at launch with about ~185,000 sold (for comparison, the second biggest launch was the DS, with ~87,000 in about the same time). 20 of the 24 launch titles were in the top 40 chart in the UK, while 9 were in the top 10 (Ridge Racer was #1 overall). France sold about 100K, and I think I read somewhere that there were at least 77K preordered PSP's in Spain. So over 350K sold with just those 3 countries. If the other countries buy the PSP at about the same rate as the PS2 (which Spain and France are pretty close to doing compared to the UK), the PSP could have possibly sold around 665K in Europe in just a few days. For comparison, I believe the PSP had sold 1.5-2 million each in the US and Japan so far (~3 million total, IIRC). This is great news for Sony since the PSP has been getting killed basically in Japan. I think it sells better than others who have competed with a Nintendo handheld, but it isn't selling as well there as it is in NA or apparently Europe if these early numbers are any indication. And to reward those who read all that boring stuff, here's a link to some new clips of Burnout Legends for the PSP: http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/burnout/media.html For those slightly unhappy with the PSP's game library, hopefully this game starts the trend towards good-to-great games for the PSP (out on 9/13 according to GS). Still got Madden, GTA, NBA Live, NFS:MW, SSX, SOCOM, X-Men Legends II, Sims 2, as well as some Japanese RPGs (PoPoLoCrois, Ys, The Legend of Heroes) to go in the next month or two, IIRC (hopefully, nothing gets delayed).
that is badass. esp the port where you can plug in a PS controller. and this basically converts the PSP into a dvd/umd player for your home. PSP...what a machine.
Why not just play your PS2 rather than getting that? Are there like any GREAT PSP-only games that aren't PS2 remakes?
Because of the features of the PSP, not to mention the portability. It's all about catering to the consumers' needs
I figured if you could make the GBA into a movie/music player, plus some other features, there's got to be some things that you can make the PSP do. And now all those crazy European hackers have their shot at modding the thing. I just wonder if the only UMD movie player will basically be a modded PSP. I'm kind of surprised that Sony hasn't either announced one now or at least licensed out the tech to some other company. I would imagine that UMD movie sales would sale even better with TV players, and of course, these players would probably sell decently as well given the amount of UMD movies out there. I just thought of this though. I wonder if you could play online with this thing. Maybe I could do something like hook this up to the TV, put in Madden or some other online game (think Madden is online), and then play someone else...who may also be playing through their TV. Not sure how much of an advantage this is, but it seems more like a console experience. Just a thought though, not sure if it would be supported. Ports or remakes? Just want clarification because I might say something like Ridge Racer or Burnout Legends would be kind of like remakes, while SSX, Madden, Live, etc. would be ports of the console versions. If you want to count games not on the PS2 (basically non-ports), I'd say Ridge Racers, MGA 1 and 2, Burnout Legends, GTA:LC, Lumines are some great games or should be anyways (just off the top of my head). SOE seems to be going all out with the PSP and will be making a much better sequel to Untold Legends, and maybe some MMORPG IIRC. There are some other "original" games that could be pretty good, but it is probably too early to tell on those. And there's still little info, IIRC, on some games like DMC, Viewtiful Joe, FF:CC, and others (some might be of the port variety, but some could be like Ridge Racer). But compared to the DS, great exclusive original titles aren't quite as plentiful. Of course, some people (myself included) don't have a problem buying a console port of a great game for the PSP since we don't get to lug our consoles around everywhere.
Well this seems to be an alternative. wrather than buying a PS2, you now have a portable gaming device in the PSP and a home gaming system for the TV. That's awesome!
If it was, I'd consider getting one. The reason I haven't gotten one, well besides the price, I don't fly that much anymore so I don't have that much use for a portable device.
I'm not much into tennis, so Virtua Tennis wasn't high on my list, but I've heard great things about it. Plus, the screenshots looked great. Good to hear that it is a high-quality game. BTW, speaking of possibly great games that I personally don't care for, the Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer PSP game got a 36/40 (four "9 out of ten" scores) from Famitsu (a popular Japanese magazine for games). I'm not sure how many of you are looking forward to it, but I'm guessing that the game will create some sales for the PSP in Europe and Japan. Also, here are some PSP SSX screens that look pretty good, IMO: http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen001.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen002.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen003.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen004.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen005.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen007.jpg http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/248/927717_20050906_screen006.jpg Good for you. And if you never wanted to play it on the go, then maybe a PSP with Virtua Tennis isn't for you (although I doubt it is a straight port and offers some things over the DC version). Still got the other original games that I mentioned above though, if you still want to talk about non-ports.
I am getting Burnout Legends next week. There are some really good games coming out for the PSP this fall. I got accepted into the SOCOM PSP beta, so can't wait to start playing that one.
virtua tennis is out for psp? i had no idea, might have to go pick that one up this afternoon. is it going to convert my 1.5 into a 2.0?
Let us know how it is. I got in a little late, and I had bought a wireless router just to get on the beta test.
Haha man... some of y'all are so touchy defending your PSP... I'm not attacking it or anything... I think it's a cool lil machine and easily better than the DS, what gadget nerd wouldn't think so... it was just an innocent question about original games for PSP becasue all I had heard about was things like Madden, Ridge Racers, SSX and the like... all the games I've played in one form or another already... Oh and how ya liking UT RC? I can't remember if you are, but if you're a EE or ever in ENS you should swing by the IEEE room sometime and say hey!
There isn't enough to make it worth the money, but the machine is good so that should change when more games start showing up. Hardware wise it's way better than the DS (though the touchscreen has been used well lately), but gameplay experience wise, right now it's not nearly as good.
Sorry if I came off as a bit too defensive. I've seen that question brought up several times, although not in such an innocent way. Let's just say I've had some arguments ready in the case of a not-so-innocent question. As for UT, I'm loving it so far. Way better than I could have hoped. You guys weren't lying when you said how much better college is compared to high school. I'm starting to feel sorry for some of the friends I have that are still in HS. I'm looking into some organizations involving video games, which is pretty cool (couldn't have done that at my HS, or probably even my own county); in fact, I have a meeting to go to in about an hour (EGaDS). I'm a CS major, so I probably won't be around ENS that much. If I get a chance though, I'll see if I can stop by sometime.
what kind of memory cards do u guys have? i'm thinking about buying the 1 GB one, but it's a little expensive.....have u guys put movies into them yet?
i'll agree that the games so far on the PSP aren't top notch apps, but what game that was made for a handheld EVER stood toe to toe against a console port? And it's been less than a year since it's release here, and from the list of games that are being released, i say the PSP will be fine. I'm just waiting for madden and live and i'm all set. buy.com has a 1 gig for $62 bucks after $20 rebate. pretty good price.
