Talk about the preseason game with the Cowgirls here. You can also talk about offseason stuff in this thread.
Just out of curiosity (and to promote talk besides "Cowboys/Texans suck"), did Aaron Glenn ever return kicks for you guys? And if so, how good was he? Parcells said Glenn will get a shot at returning some kicks tonight, and I was just curious to see if he is a decent return man. I have vague memories of Glenn returning kicks from a while back, but I'm not sure if he started to lose it in recent years. Maybe I'm just hard to please, but I haven't really liked most of the return guys that Dallas have put out so far in preseason, except for maybe Tyson Thompson, and I like him more as a RB than a return specialist. I'm still baffled as to why they aren't giving Woody Dantzler a shot at returning kicks since he was pretty successful at it 2 years ago. I thought Parcells said that cutting Woody was a mistake a year ago(oh that's a good quote), but I didn't think he was referring to Woody's safety and special teams coverage skills at the time. Given the situation the team is in, I wouldn't be surprised if Parcells cuts him again. Now I'm going off an a tangent. Although Castor27 did say that we could talk about offseason stuff in this thread...he never said which team's offseason. As for the game tonight, I really don't even care that much what the final score is to be honest. I might even be more concerned with a 10-7 win than a 28-27 loss. I never really cared for the Texans vs Cowboys thing, especially since I'm not from Houston or Dallas; in fact, I think I even have some hate for Dallas (the city) just because of the Mavericks. I haven't really kept up with the Texans much in the preaseason, but the Cowboys so far have a lot of work to do if they want to do something this season, IMO. I'd like to see some productivity from the offense;maybe I can even hope for 2-3 offensive TD's. I think Mat McBriar is a pretty good punter, but we don't have to showcase his leg the whole time. I'd like to see the O-line improve a little bit and actually create some holes for Julius Jones. And it would be nice if I could feel at least a little bit comfortable with either Drew Henson or Tony Romo as a backup. Speaking of feeling comfortable, seeing Jose Cortez nail some more kicks will make me feel better at the K position. Given the offensive problems of the Cowboys in the past, we'll need a good kicker if we want to stay even close in games. On defense, I just hope we can get some decent pass coverage. Nothing against Kurt Warner and Matt Hasselbeck, but they looked like Troy Aikman in his prime against us. I don't even want to think about what Carr's numbers would be like against the same type of coverage. The problems might be due to the change in the 3-4 (I know Parcells stayed with the 3-4 base defense despite ARI going with 3 WR sets on offense) as well as some injuries, but that's still something I'm worried about. Considering the talent we have in the secondary, as well as the pass rushers we have, I don't think we should be giving up those types of numbers too much. The pass rush has been a little better than previous years, although I still want to see more from Ware and the gang before claiming that as a non-issue. Ware may have played OK last game, but let's see if he can keep it up. Oh, and hopefully the game is injury-free (for both sides). I hate preseason injuries, especially at this point of the preseason. Also, it would be nice to see Killzone type graphics from each next-gen console...oops, wrong hobby.
Is there any reason why the Cowboys haven't played in Houston since 2002? Was this part of the deal to get them to play the first Texans regular season game here? Seems like we go to Texas Stadium every year for preseason. Shouldn't it alternate?
To RC: No, Glenn never returned kicks or punts for us, during the regular season at least. (he might have once or twice due to injury, but no more than that). In other words no he wasn't our premier returner. Capers is very conservative with his returners, as long as they don't fumble, and get some positive yards, then that's all we need. I guess he doesn't want to risk extra injury to his key players or something, but we usually have a guy for just returning. However, Glenn was a great returner for the Jets for many years, so who knows. Contrary to what I said though, Capers is letting Buchanon return punts in today's game. Phillip is always bragging how he likes to score TD's
Tigerbait is right. I've heard Capers say before that he didn't like putting key members of the defense in a kick return role, I guess to preserve their health. I don't know what Glenn's ability returning kicks these days are, but he wasn't denied the role in Houston because of his ability.
Thanks for the info Tigerbait and Raven Lunatic. That sounds a little bit like Parcells. I remember when we originally drafted Terrence Newman, everyone mentioned that he could really help out the return game. But Parcells never let him return kicks/punts because he didn't want his #1 or #2 CB getting hurt like that, especially since Newman is kind of small. But, like Capers, it seems like Parcells will let Newman return at least one punt tonight, and he might keep the job for the season. I'll guess we'll both have some return guys to keep an eye on tonight.
Isn't there a rotation for 4 years to play each team in the regular season and the location switches? That's how the schedule is made? Texans 28 Cowgirls 21 Can't wait for next year! Go TEXANS!!
Yeah, we play the NFC East every four years or something. Since we played them in 2002 at home, we play them in 2006. I hope we play on Thanksgiving. Will the NFL let us play on Thanksgiving day? We could have had the chance to play last Thanksgiving Day, but the NFL rather have a bigger name play the Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
To recap: Regular season: Texans lead 1-0 Preseason: Tied 1-1 IIRC we lost at Texas Stadium in '03. I didn't even know we played them last year.
I seem to recall Glenn attempting a Kick Off return. It may have been a pre-season thing though. He muffed the kick (or was that Gaffney). I'm probably wrong. This will be a close game, but the Texan's should pull it off. Perhaps Gary Walker should sit this one out.
Yeah you're right. It was late December against the Jags last season and it was real windy in Jacksonville so Gaffney and Glenn had trouble catching the kicks. Glenn had one of the biggest punt returns in Texans history in 2002 when he set up Kris Brown for the winning field goal and our first ever road victory.
The offense has been both good and bad on the first two possesions. The Good: 1.) decent protection for Carr... even on plays where the Cowboys have blitzed, he's had enough time to look at his receivers and make a throw with something on it. 2.) Carr nailed Johnson on a 30 yard post route which Johnson dropped, but at least Carr has that ability in him when given time (the play would have been called back even if AJ held on due to a hands to the face penalty on the o-line). 3.) D. Davis had a couple of nice runs The BAD: 1.) While Carr was accurate on that previously mentioned pass, he failed to execute a couple of plays where the reciever was pretty open. 2.) Penalties galore... maybe that's why Carr seemed to have more time than he normally does. 3.) Confidence. In the first drive, it looked like they had it and had some pretty nifty plays (attempted). In the second drive, they looked more conservative, didn't call anything special, and a 3 and out. Overall... at least the defense looks good.
Yea... they still don't have it back yet (5-6 minutes now). This reminds me of all those Rockets games on channel 51. EDIT: Now they're trying to fool people by just running the tape of the pre-game show. I guess they don't want to lose potential viewers, but this is really ridiculous. At least give the radio feed or something.
