I know there have been plenty of stories in the past about homecooking from the scorekeepers, like how John Stockton always had huge assist nights in Utah. I thought they had fixed this, placing the role in the hands of the NBA alone.

But I thought this was funny when I was reviewing the Rockets game yesterday. They recorded this play as one of Damian Lillard's 5 assists, and it's never been corrected.

I wonder if they review tape and calls later, or if they just trust it once it's in the books and only double-check when an issue is raised.

It is a pretty interesting topic, really-

I would imagine as more advanced technology continues to integrate into the game, this types of errors will iron themselves out.

The Missile Cameras came to mind first.

You don't need a missile tracking camera to see that's not an assist.

how about hardens first half 3 that was called a 2 vs the heat? Maybe missile cameras could have caught that

sure if the assists had meaning behind it...its reviewed...otherwise...who would care...if he had 4 or 5 assists...not a lot of people..

    However...a constant flubbing of stats..is a bigger issue....one game..most likely overlooked...

I recall the big triple double LeBron recorded that was taken away because Ben Wallace "handed" LeBron his 10th rebound.

My conspiracy theory: David Stern setting Lillard up for RoY.

Should have been a game winner for Yao (nice defense by Godzilla at 1:08 )

Man we had such a good team at one point after that season. I really wanted to see what this team could do:

    Yao / Hill
    Scola / Hayes
    Battier / Ariza
    Martin / Budinger / Barry
    Brooks / Lowry

Do you go by the play-by-play or is there any official place that would reveal the assist was counted base on which play?

I go by the game logs on nba.com and other sites. I did confirm that it was one of only 5 recorded in the logs, but technically it is possible that they screwed up *twice* and that another assist by Lillard somewhere was mistakenly given to someone else.
