I'm pretty sure Pop is kidding. When the Spurs aren't playing well during a game and he gets visibly PO'd and calls a timeout, do you seriously think they don't heed his words in the huddle?

I think he means Duncan doesn't even need to be coached. He's basically a 40 year old HOFer with 5 rings under his belt, after all.

“When I’m having a glass of wine at dinner, the first thing I say is ‘Thank you, Timmy.’ And then I have my dinner.’’ - Gregg Popovich

With the veterans on the team, I don't think Pop even coaches Xs and Os anymore.

The superstars in this league do pretty much anything they want. The star players can get coaches fired if they want, they play the minutes they want, the run the plays they want.

Duncan is perhaps the most fundamentally sound player in the history of the game. What could Pop possibly say that Duncan doesn't already know? That doesn't take anything away from Pop, it just shows the level of respect he has for Duncan.

Clearly he means that Duncan is so old he's lost his hearing.

Yeah, if you're taking this as a serious sign of anything about the Spurs you haven't seen enough Pop interviews. Its definitely just a lighthearted pooh-poohing of the need to make everything into an ESPN story, mixed with a little respect for Duncan.

For some reason, I look at this is more of a defense for McFail, lol.

Good potential thread (a.k.a. "the ceiling is through the roof").

    Will read again.

I wish the Rockets currently had this kind of issue... You know, a fundamentally sound player or even a coach like pop.

The guy probably knows every there is to know about all five positions in basketball. He'd be such a good coach if he goes that route when he retires.

Seriously, Duncan has been playing for Pops for 18 years. I wouldn't be surprised if Duncan knew the play calls before Pops called the huddles.

Pops doesn't need to coach Duncan. Duncan knows pretty much every play and has seen every situation that's possible in a game.

I wouldn't be surprised if they finish the other's sentences.

Tim still likes to listen to POp's antics during interviews though.

There's nothing Pops can say at this point that Duncan hasn't heard before in the last 2 decades.

He sure listened to Pop and sat his ass on the bench in the final moments of Game 6 of the 2013 Finals when all the Spurs needed was one rebound to win the championship.
