I am pleased to announce that the University of Houston has been selected by NBC News and Telemundo to host a Republican presidential candidates’ debate on the UH campus Feb. 26, 2016. This will be the final GOP debate before the pivotal "Super Tuesday" primary elections held in Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia on March 1. Alaska, Minnesota and Wyoming also will award delegates on that same day.

This event will shine an international spotlight on our campus, offering an opportunity to highlight our student successes, research innovations and unmatched school spirit. As the University becomes a part of political history, the debate will further confirm our status as one of the country’s powerhouse institutions.

At their core, universities are dedicated to creating and sharing knowledge. As a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research institution, UH is committed to providing affordable and outstanding educational excellence to over 42,000 students. Hosting such an important public discussion about our country’s future – one that impacts our community locally, nationally and abroad – is precisely in line with our steadfast commitment to leadership and our ongoing academic pursuit of scientific, political and social discourse.

There will be no University funds used to host the debate. Moreover, the same proposal to host a debate was extended to the Democratic National Committee.

On behalf of University Marketing, Communication and Media Relations, P’nina Topham will manage debate, media relations and all NBC News and Telemundo interactions on behalf of UH. Susie Molina, on behalf of University Governmental and Community Relations, will manage all academic events, campus activities, tickets, logistics and any interactions with the Republican National Committee.

Additional details including debate location and campus programming will be announced at a later date. Please visit uh.edu/debate for the most current information.

As we invite the nation into our home, I encourage the entire Cougar community to become involved in what we know will be an engaging and memorable event.

Congratulations to the UH external relations team. The event should bring the school some good exposure (even if the debaters are clowns). Always happy to see UH growing up.

Good for UH. It seems like the university administration has done a very good job of improving the university's profile.

My guess is that they will hold the event in Moore's Opera House, lots of parking right in the vicinity and on a Friday night, the staff and students will have cleared out long before the debate starts.

Anyone visiting UH should just park at ERP on most normal days, lots of parking and the shuttle drops you off right in front of the SC.

Fine. UH is now the most expensive public school in the state. Meanwhile Renu Khator is the 7th highest paid public university president in the country. Not necessarily knock UH's academics, but they don't really have the status to justify how high their tuition is or how much money their president makes. "Affordable" and "UH" should not be in the same sentence together.

Well you can thank Rick Perry for deregulating state tuition. In the old days, the university would have to go to the legislature to get approval for a tuition increase and said legislators would promptly start to analyze the spending of the university and challenge the reasons for tuition increases.

Now UH can raise tuition at will so efficient and cost effective management no longer matter as much. As long as all universities are raising tuition together there is no price competition. Texas was a model for affordable education until the Republicans blew up the tuition model.

UH is busting at the seams in terms of applicants and enrollments.

Yet they get the least amount of state funding, per student, and have the highest ratio of staff to students in the state.

UH can charge whatever the f*** they want and sleep quite comfortably while doing so.

Isn't the U of H campus a bit too working class, "urban" and multicultural for the Repubs?

Maybe some of the undocumented students who go there can take the Repubs to task. :)

My best experience at UH was when they hosted Frank Zappa and the Mothers at Hofheinz Pavillion back in 1975. Good times.

Maybe they'll raze all the row-houses like they had planned to do for the Olympics.
