Rivers is apparently steadfastly refusing to even discuss an extension with the Chargers in light of their potential move to LA (and/or is playing an extreme version of hardball and wants to get PAID). I read the article with my usual Texan blinders on, allowing a momentary flash of interest before mentally moving on. But then I started to read the comments and I'm apparently not the only one to make the link to Houston; several commenters did, as well, which made me think maybe the idea wasn't too ridiculous. (And, no - I'm not necessarily swayed by groupthink; but having seemingly non-Texan fans draw the same conclusion at least reinforced that my idea wasn't just Texan-fueled silliness.) Would any of you deal for him? Cap hit is $17MM; I assume a trade would include an extension and thus, some cap relief for the team acquiring him. I admit to not really liking the guy and I can't really reconcile that with his performance. But he's been an incredibly durable, efficient QB and even though he seems much older to me, is still only 33.
Would love to get Rivers depending on the cost. I think this team has the talent if they just had a QB.

Has a few years where he certainly seemed gunslinger-y - but his INT rate is fairly good (2.6%; same an PeePee's) and he completes a high % of passes. Again, I dislike him so I don't think I can be rational - but, man... isn't he a significant upgrade? And he's 33; carries himself like a 40-year old but... 33 is young-ish.
I get a Jeff George feel from him. Rocket for an arm, but nothing upstairs. Doesn't seem like a BOB kind of guy. Seems like the exactly opposite, actually.
I'm not bringing my own personal preference into the conversation (I just want to win, dadgummit). Just stating that I can't see it happening given the staff in place. Funny enough, I couldn't see it happening with the last staff either. Would have totally been possible under Capers though
Rivers is actually a really talented dude, and if I had to pick between him and all the other gunslingery type guys out there (Eli, Flacco, etc) I'd totally go with him. But you're right. Watching Rivers try to run this system would be like watching Little Richard try to play Beethoven.
Except he's the opposite of that. He doesn't have a rocket for an arm. Have you watched how hard he works to throw the ball? He is a very intelligent QB that makes the right read most of the time. The knock on him is that he is super intense and can be a real prick on the field at times despite being a good guy off the field. I would absolutely, 100% go get him if we could. Wouldn't even hesitate.
I'd be all over this! I can't imagine hesitating for a second, outside of figuring out what it would cost us. Rivers on this team last year puts us in the playoffs...and that gives us a shot. It's been since Warren Moon since this city has had a QB in Rivers' league. They're extremely difficult to come by. If you have a chance to do it, you make it happen if possible.
It's weird to hear people say he couldn't run a complicated offense when he's run Norv Turner's and Ken Whisenhunts offensive systems perfectly.
Rivers is incredible, one of the best QB's in the league since almost day one. Of course you trade for him if you can. Hoyer sucks, Savage and Mallet are unproven. With Rivers we would immediately be championship contenders. NO BRAINER Dude was winning like 12-13 games a year when he had LT and with almost no help keeps his team in playoff contention every year
He's always struck me as a poor man's Peyton Manning (with a lot more intensity): what he lacks physically he more than makes up for mentally. And you nailed it - watching him labor to throw is*exactly* why I assumed he was older. I've never been able to put my finger on why until now. But he's 33! Sincere question: why do you say that? Mental? Physical? Other than he looks completely unorthodox throwing a football and can be super-intense (as well as prolifically fertile, apparently - 7 kids!), I've never heard him knocked for much.
Rivers would fit this offense perfectly. He is at his best when getting rid of the ball quickly, slant/quick out/curl routes, etc.... Chargers have been effective running the dink/dunk offense the last couple of years.
He talks with a heavy drawl so maybe people are assuming he's stupid? His football IQ is a huge reason he's been so successful.
