Simple poll. Who do you think should be the starter at the beginning of the season going on what you know about their skillsets/potential now.

Mallet. Ceiling is much higher. Hoyer is a poorman's version of Fitz.

    Hoyer </= Fitz

Mallet has more physical talent. From the Browns' game you could see he know what he was seeing in front of him in an instant. Knew his reads, worked his progressions quickly and let it fly all within a little more than 2 seconds a snap. Dude processes a ton of information quick. His arm should be just as strong, if not stronger, after his recovery.

His success I believe is all on his mind. He's got the physical traits, just has to string it all together.

Mallet is intriguing because of the potential. It seems like we know what Hoyer is and that's a backup.

Mallet... much more positive and > potential. He has this run and gun mentality, doesn't slow down. He is hungry.

Hoyer, umm no. Come on guys. We already know what he has. Let's not make a mistake.

At least it is not "Matt Cassell or EJ Manuel" or "Geno Smith or Ryan Fitzpatrick" or "Zach Mettenbegger or ..."

Mallet has "star" potential. If he stays healthy, he will be impressive, and by the end of the season will be an established "starter" in the league. He will be the best QB the Texans have ever had. Hoyer is Fitz revisited, career back up.

Hoyer was signed to be the backup.

Mallet was signed to be the starter.

Why exactly is that? Is he also a promising actor or something I don't know about?

I don't think it's at as cut and dry as that.

The hope is that Mallet can win the starting job and become a legit NFL starter. But Brian Hoyer was signed to be the team's safety net.

 No, he is not that great looking. But he is smarter than he looks, has a powerful arm, and knows the ins and outs of OBrien's system. In the SEC he had some scary performances. He has not had a chance in the NFL, he flashed some skills in his game as a starter, then ran on some bad luck. When healthy and if he can stay healthy, I truly believe that he will be the best the Texans have ever had. I will be shocked if doesn't do very well.

A lot of people have voted for Mallett. But if you were to make the choices "Mallett" or "Mallet," most people would choose Mallet and not the correct spelling "Mallett"

Just curious, who told you this? Do you normally pay your backup more than your starter?
