Remember when Peyton Manning coming to the Texans last year was a real possibility...

With this city's luck, it would have worked out about as well as Ed Reed did.

It's weird that this keeps coming up.

    1. The goal is to win the Super Bowl, not win a ton of regular season games. Till Denver wins a SB, the move for Peyton is a wash.....unless as a fan your goal for your team is to get on ESPN a lot.

    2. With the way the Texans have failed to protect QB's year after year after year, who in their right mind thinks that Peyton Manning stays healthy even if he had come to Houston?

    3. The same people whining about this would be the same people killing the Texans had they gutted their team for Peyton only to have him not bounce back from injury like he did. Peyton had a very questionable status at the time and it would have been a fan meltdown worse than the Ed Reed situation had they gone after Peyton and had it blow up in their faces.

The team is currently building something now, why keep bringing this up?

    4. It would have saved Kubiak's job, whom everyone here thinks is the worst coach in NFL history.

It keeps coming up because this is what sports fans do. What if Mike Scott had pitched game 7? What if Jordan hadn't "retired" for 2 yrs could the Rockets have beaten the Bulls in the finals, etc.

We have the benefit of hindsight right now and its a no-brainer that the Texans should have signed Manning.

Guys like Manning (and Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Luck) give your team a chance to win the Super Bowl every year. In a lose-and-you're-out tournament such as the NCAA tournament or NFL playoffs the best team doesn't always win. But with these guys you always have a shot.

There's just too many assumptions that go into this though. We'd have to assume that he bounced back from injury, while assuming that the guys we lost as cap casualties didn't handicap the team, while assuming that Peyton wouldn't have gotten hurt by our line not doing their job like so many QB's have since he would have been here, while assuming he doesn't disappear in the playoffs to give us a chance. It's just too many assumptions to have any value whatsoever outside of just being something for malcontent fans who whine about.

Winning a ton of regular season games (a) gets you to the playoffs, (b) makes winning playoff games easier by having homefield advantage, and (c) makes advancing in the playoffs easier by reducing your chance of having to play in the first round of the playoffs.

And the actual goal of sports is to entertain the fans. Winning a SB is the ultimate route to doing that, but not the only one. Making a SB is better than just making the playoffs. Making the playoffs is better than going 8-8. Going 8-8 is better than going 2-14. I think Texans fans would have enjoyed Denver's season last year far more than their own.

After being so spectacularly wrong making this argument with Ryan Mallett's start, you'd think you'd have learned that QBs have a huge impact on their sack totals. There is a reason why Peyton Manning has never gotten sacked much in his entire career despite endless combinations of linemen protecting him. When you know how to call protections, change plays, and get the ball out quickly as needed, you don't get sacked nearly as much. When defenses are scared of you and play you more conservatively, you don't get sacked nearly as much.

It never ceases to amaze me when people say this - it's like a 3rd grader's analysis of 'people". Yes, people would be whining, but *different* people would be whining. People are here on record in a very long thread about whether they supported or opposed making the move. If it failed, then the people opposing the move would have been whining instead of the other way around.

It was brought up again because a member of the Texans spoke about it. Does bringing it up here somehow affect the building of the team? If you don't like the discussion, no one said you had to participate.

    Such a bad post, man.

Yeah I would love to think about a SB defeat. It's better than what we've ever experienced.

Peyton has made multiple free agents come there. People wanna play for the contender. The Rockets are seeing that now.

I don't agree with this. I'd love to see the Texans in a Super Bowl even if they don't win. For comparison, most baseball fans here have great memories of the Astros 2004 season and they didn't even make the World Series that year.
