In the NBA, can teams that finish tied for 1st in a division but lose out on the tiebreaker raise a Division Championship banner?

Similar to the 2001 St. Louis Co-ardinals and their NL Central Co-Champions banner.

If they lose out on the tiebreaker then they obviously arnt Division Champions are they? Means they go to number 2 in the division, thus ensuring that they arnt division champions.

As far as I'm concerned, a tiebreaker is definitive. If the Spurs were to raise a banner in the AT&T Center, I would personally storm in there, tear it down and burn it.

Did anyone see when UT put up a banner this year that said they were co-Big 12 champions in football last year?

are we talking about the Spurs and the Blazers or the Spurs and the Rockets?

but a tiebreaker is a tiebreaker.

The Spurs and Blazers are the two teams eligible for this situation (tying for 1st but losing the tiebreaker ... to the Rockets and Nuggets, respectively).

If you're truly a championship quality team, you don't raise division banners. How many division banners do you see in boston or La?

There seems to be conflicting sources out there about what will happen.

For instance, just last year the Spurs were in the same situation, finishing tied for 1st in the Division at 56-26 with the Hornets. The Hornets won the tiebreaker.

Basketball-reference gives the 2007-08 Spurs credit for a Division Title.

"56-26, Finished 1st in NBA Southwest Division"

Giving them 16 Division Titles on their teams page:
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/

But other sites list them as finishing in 2nd place last year. Sounds like a question for the NBA office.

Did anyone here attend a game at the AT&T Center this year and see a banner for last season?

The opening night game recap does not mention any banner being raised:

If you tie you are division champions. The tiebreaker is only relevant in terms of playoff seedings.

I think they don't care about that because it means nothing.
NYY piled up several AL-east banner 2001-2008 but still call this period a failure.
    Also
There are larger things for the Rockets
(I will be very happy to see a banner up there, I will be happier if it's something other than "southwest" for the Rockets)

Yes they do. They do it in the same fashion as the Rockets. One banner with all the years they won the division listed.

Unlike the Rockets, they have a separate banner for each conference championship.
