Seems like a big deal for a minor leaguer. Never heard of him. Anyone know about him? http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...n-infielder-anibal-sierra-free-agent-contract Spoiler
Looks like the contract will be applied to the Astros' upcoming IFA pool, which is currently $2,197,000. In addition, once it's made official on July 2, the Astros will be in the penalty for the following 2 IFA periods. They won't be able to sign anyone for over $300,000 until the 2019-20 IFA period.
That is a lot. And since they did that, they should commit to more top IFA in the next signing period.
This seems very odd. It also seems like a pretty big contract for a not very high level prospect. He's a good glove, no hit type from what I can gather. I honestly don't get this one.
Almost makes me like the deal Seems the ones that Luhnow hits on the most are the ones that no one else is really high on
What are you basing this on? I don't have a ton of stats available...150 ABs as a 20 year old in Cuba. Doesn't help me evaluate his hit tool exactly--I'd rather hear from a scout. Do you have that kind of info anywhere by chance?
Also, going over in this next ifa crop may not be a bad deal, and may be more likely given that they have low picks and didn't reap any comp picks as they may have been expecting. And if they end up with multiple comp picks after letting Castro/Fister/Gomez/Rasmus/Feldman/Valbuena go in FA, that would further mitigate the risk of not being able to sign big name IfA the next two years.
They have no reason not to splurge in this upcoming IFA pool. Hopefully they have the go ahead from ownership to go after whoever they want to.
Luhnow is extremely frugal, the Astros didn't pay $3.5 million because they felt like it.... Which tells me other teams were interested.
Spit up my drink. Signing sounds fishy. Luhnow must have some inside stuff on this guy that hasn't made it to the media.
Well it's good to see the other good teams were interested. The only small thing I read was something from Twitter a few months back saying he impressed scouts and he was considered the top international SS prospect. When will he start minor league ball?
Won't be officially signed until July, so probably not until next year, as the minor league seasons end in August/early-September. Might get a cup of coffee somewhere at the end of the summer
