Well, after a quick search, here is a decent reference at a glance:

    http://www.mandarintools.com/chardict.html

simple: 华 húa flowery; illustrious; chinese

    or

simple: 汉 hàn Chinese; name of a dynasty

This is a guess, and may not fit your humorous intent without also adding the word for symbol:

標記 simple: 标记 biāo jì sign; mark; symbol; to mark up

Cause there are a zillion of them.
Also, cause 70% of Japanese writing is Chinese anyway.

I'm no expert, but isn't there 2 types of writing systems in Japan? One utilizing a lot of Chinese characters, another seldom draws similarities.

similar to Chinese' traditional and simplistic forms?

Not sure actually. All I know is when I watch Anime and they don't translate something, I ask my wife what it says. She says she can read 70% of the Japanese words.

First, if you get a Chinese symbol the artists will be laughing inside at you.

Second, that symbol will take 5 minutes, maybe. You won't even have time to enjoy the pain of a real tattoo.

Third, you mind as well get some tribal to go with the Chinese symbol while you're there. Maybe bring your WalkMan cassette player and listen to some Counting Crows and Mr. Jones it out to mute the laughing.

Intervention for AB. I mean we all love yao, but getting a chinese tattoo is a little extreme, no? :)

I can't speak to it's accuracy, but the symbol labelled kanji on this page should be it.
