Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling said the NBA's efforts to terminate his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers are "illegal" and that it would force his family to pay an enormous capital gains tax that would be "egregious," according to his response to NBA charges filed Tuesday.

In a 32-page response to the league, he said he will fight the charges and noted that he has received offers of more than $2.5 billion for the team.

His wife, Shelly Sterling, is planning to file a response to the NBA by midnight Tuesday that strongly asserts her position as an innocent bystander in the league's efforts to strip her family's ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The response, which is being made separate from her husband Donald, was due by midnight (ET) Tuesday after the NBA filed formal charges last week against Donald Sterling, accusing him of damaging the league with racist remarks.

By reasserting her position as the innocent 50-percent owner, Shelly Sterling is building on her case that she should be able to retain at least some ownership stake in the team. Meanwhile, she is trying to sell a controlling interest in the team after her husband authorized her to sell it on his behalf. She visited with former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Sunday at her residence in Malibu and received a strong offer for the team and commitment to keep the team in Los Angeles, said the person familiar with the negotiations.

Several other potential buyers have expressed serious interest, the person said, with Bank of America working to help Shelly Sterling sell the team on her own terms and not through a forced sale by the NBA. The league is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter June 3, with a three-quarters vote of league owners required to strip the Sterlings of ownership.

In response to reports of Donald Sterling agreeing to let his wife sell the team, the NBA said last week it will proceed as planned to terminate the family's ownership. However, the person said the NBA is aware of Shelly Sterling's efforts to sell the team on her own and might like to see the team sold without a forced termination. Depending on the negotiations, the June 3 deadline could be extended.

A sticking point could be whether Shelly Sterling keeps a stake in the team – a prospect the NBA opposes. Her formal response will lay out why the NBA is wrong to force her out because of racist remarks made by her husband.

The team could sell for more than $1 billion after the Sterlings bought the team in 1981 for around $12 million.

If the NBA votes to terminate the Sterlings' ownership, NBA Commisssioner Adam Silver would take over the team and the team could be sold "at such prices and on such terms as the Commissioner shall deem reasonable and appropriate," according to the NBA constitution.

V. Stiviano, the woman who recorded banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling's racist remarks, was assaulted by two men in New York City on Sunday night, her lawyer, Mac Nehoray, told RadarOnline and ABC News.

She is in New York because for an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, according to RadarOnline. Stiviano has not yet filed a police report but, according to Nehoray, she "will probably do so."

Nehoray told ABC News that she was examined by a doctor and was found to be "banged up but OK."

Everyone around the Clippers knew that Donald Sterling was still Donald Sterling.

He had been steered away from serious involvement in the basketball operations side for several years. He had been kept out of the limelight as much as possible.

But everyone around the Clippers knew the man, knew the history, and knew that someday Mount Sterling could erupt in controversy and there would be a lot of damage and cleanup.

Blake Griffin knew it.

Speaking with GQ’s Zach Baron on a variety of topics (including comedy, dating in Los Angeles, the Lakers, LeBron in Cleveland, etc.), Griffin said he knew about Sterling’s racism from right before he got drafted but that he and the owner had little interaction.

“When the draft lottery came out and the Clippers said they were gonna draft me, I went to Google to find out more about the Clippers, because I didn’t know a lot," Griffin said. "And I was like, 'Okay, team owned by Donald Sterling.'

"So then I typed in 'Donald Sterling' in Google, and the first thing that pops up is 'Donald Sterling racist.' And I was like, 'Whoa!'

"So obviously I explored that, read a whole bunch of articles, read the deposition at one of his court cases..."

The fallout from Donald Sterling's 2014 career-ending racist remarks continued Tuesday, as his wife was victorious over Sterling's alleged mistress V. Stiviano in court, according to USA Today.

Shelly Sterling, who has been married to the former Los Angeles Clippers owner for 51 years, alleged that Stiviano seduced her husband into giving her property and lavish gifts during their relationship.

The Los Angeles Superior Court ruled that Stiviano, 31, must return $800,000 given to her in cash and luxury cars by the disgraced millionaire, as well as surrender a $1.8 million duplex. The judge ruled that Stiviano and Sterling plotted to hide the lavish gifts from Shelly Sterling.

Stiviano first came into the public eye in April 2014 when an audio recording of Sterling making racially charged comments to her was obtained by TMZ. In the tape, the real estate magnate can be heard telling Stiviano she couldn't "bring black people to his games." The release led the billionaire to be banned for life from the NBA, ordered to pay a $2.5 million fine and forced to sell the Clippers.

At the time, Stiviano told ABC's 20/20 that the released conversation was one of many instances when Sterling exhibited racist behavior.

"Part of what the world heard was only 15 minutes. There's a number of other hours that the world doesn't know," Stiviano told Barbara Walters.

During the trial, Stiviano and Sterling denied engaging in a sexual relationship, despite Shelly Sterling's assumptions, according to The Washington Post. Originally, Shelly Sterling sought $3.6 million from Stiviano, but lawyers later reduced the claim to $2.8 million. All was rewarded back to her, save for $200,000, which Judge Richard Fruin Jr. said he had no credible evidence to support.
